There will be a lot of unhappy people. I wonder if this will affect the IRS in processing tax returns.

Federal budget will go down significantly if people do indeed leave in large number. DOGE mission accomplished. :)

Don't forget that many companies in the public sector are also making their employees go back to work in the office. Gone are the days of COVID where lots of jobs became remote.

I know that many companies are requiring back to work... and the mayor of Houston ordered everyone back to the office...

(Opps.. put down back to work... shows my bias I guess)...

Not Feds, but we have lots of WFH folks in my neighborhood. Between walking the dog three times a day, taking a few laps in their pool, dropping the kids off at school, mowing the lawn, food shopping at 11, going out to lunch, golf at 3, washing the car, I'm not sure how much work is getting done.

They sure don't need to retire early!

This is centered around the DC beltway. My wife is a FED employee and has been totally WFH since 2021. She will never see the inside of an office again.

I think in gov't and private sector the pendulum swung too far. The organization I worked for did not allow remote until COVID and then went to some sort of hybrid but some are mostly remote. IME there is a lot of dead weight and what better way to be retired in place than not even come in? I live down the street from one of my former coworkers and based off of observation alone, they are not "working" during working hours (was true in the office too though but at least there were appearances to keep up and look busy). I was one of the first back into the office (couldn't do most of my job at home due to system access) and Igot screwed doing things that should have been done by others had they got out of their PJs and come in..... not a good dynamic when some are allowed and some are not.... I was going to quit anyway (FIRE baby!) but if it wasn't on my radar, I'd be looking to leave or move to a position where I could stay in my PJs and walk my dog and work on puzzles and stuff while a mouse jiggler kept my work computer awake.

If one looks at major innovation, it comes through incidental collaboration across disciplines and IMO WFH does not facilitate the accidental mixing of disciplines and networking across orgnazational boundaries. Also, over time "corporate" culture declines (can coast for a few years) and that can undermine efficiency and teamwork. Not all 100% black and white but I imagine the more productive and profitable companies will prove to be ones with employees that interact in person regularly. I suspect most jobs that can be geographically isolated will either be offshored or replaced by AI. The human element will the the value humans can add to the economy.

<mod note> Discussions of policy measures should be posted in the “FIRE related public policy” forum and must be related to early retirement.
