I received an email offer for $20 off H&R Block Tax Software. The Federal Deluxe program is available for $41, versus $61. Perhaps I am missing something, but somehow, this doesn't look like a bargain compared with previous years.

No bargain. I got an Email too, I do every year, never a deal. Amazon has a good deal every year around Thanksgiving. We get Deluxe fed, no State.

Look at the add ons.

Ours used to be a bit complicated, not so much now that we're retired.

Thanks for your confirmations; I only paid $20 last year for Federal. I'll hold out for a better deal. My return is pretty consistent.

A big eh deal? The past few years, HRBlock Deluxe Federal+State is about $24 around Black Friday.
Yes, I bought mine around that time for Deluxe Fed & State for about that price.
Then I sat on it until the new year sometime and it went down a few more dollars.
But still I like the certainty of getting it early.

I answered H&R's survey after doing taxes last year, and gave them my honest feedback about how their slow update to fix their software error with the inherited IRA portion held me up from submitting my return earlier. They sent me a $20 off for their 2024 tax year software. I got that email, and my first thought was the same as those above...that I can probably get the software cheaper from Amazon on Black Friday.

Unsolicited advice: FreeTaxUSA has been very good. Has no income limit. I have been using it for the last 5 or so years. I do normal stuff like 401k's, IRA's, taxable brokerage investments, tax loss harvesting, etc. I don't have state income tax so can't speak to that.

I usually wait until early December. There is always a deal on Amazon - typically in the $20-25 for Deluxe w/ one state.

No bargain. Find an AARP tax location near you. Free. They will walk you through your tax return and file it. I've met so many locals who used to pay $200, $300, $400 to get their taxes done. Makes me mad. We saved our community $270,000 in tax return fees last year. I do my own taxes on the software AARP provides. As a volunteer, I work with retired professional accountants.

Not to mention that it's a very preliminary draft. There are so many updates that will take place.

I prefer to use last year's program (with tentative numbers) until at least Dec.1. I can't even remember when my state forms came out? January or later?

I got 2023 TT deluxe and a $10 gift card for $36 on 11/25/23 from Amazon.

I wait for the deal on Black Friday even though I know it will not be final for a few months (the SW gets updated)

H&R had sent me a $20 off offer after I had a minor complaint on their survey about a software update that didn't come until the last second (posted upthread about it) this last year. But last week, I got another email from them saying essentially "we value you so much that we are giving you this 50% off offer for the 2024 software." I haven't checked the prices yet, but I'm pretty sure the $20 off is going to be pretty close to the 50% off since I don't need a complicated form or have any state tax return to do.

I usually wait an ultimately purchase it from Amazon. One benefit from purchasing it there is that it's always available for download in the future. Handy when your laptop eventually goes kaput and you want to look at older data..

If it gets it under $25 that’s not bad. (For Fed & state)
