Thanks for the site. I can see how one might be elated by seeing themselves "portrayed" in the movie or, alternately horrified.If Mr. Hand is based on the teacher I think he was - he died a few years ago.
Like I said - every guy who was my class thought he was Spicoli. I had a friend sue Crowe for 'defamation of character' and got a guitar from Crowe's wife (Nancy Wilson of Heart) as settlement. He was the basis for Mark the Rat Ratner.
The book was less fictionalized - I was able to identify several people based on what happens in the book.

A classier portrayal of a HS class was the book "What Really Happened to the Class of '65?" by Medved and Wallechinsky. It's a factual update, 10 years later on several of the class mates of the authors.
As a member of my own "Class of '65" I could relate - especially to the Viet Nam stories - but not the location in a suburb of LA. My Midwest HS was about as far from LA as the Earth is from the Moon but YMMV
