I suppose this falls under Travel so I put it here. I'm looking to rent a cargo van in a couple of weeks. I looked at the "regular" places like U-Haul and Penske and Enterprise but their prices are outrageous. I can't spend $1,200 to rent a van for 3 days. So I looked at Turo and can get one there for probably more like $300 or so which is fine.

Do any of you have any experience renting through them?

I rented through them once. It's kind of like Air BnB. It depends on the renter. Also, you don't have a large company to fall back on if something goes wrong. I would do it again. e sure to take pictures both before and after.

I've used Turo 4 or 5 times, starting during the pandemic when it was the only game in town for my destinations. All were good experiences, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it again. Look at the reviews and go for highly rated car owners. If they communicate well with you, then I think you'll be fine.

I've posted before that they are a criminal enterprise. They break all kinds of laws. In most places it is illegal to use airport parking lots for commercial purposes yet that is their main operating model. If you are comfortable associating yourself with a crime syndicate, rent from turo! If you are in an accident, don't be surprised if you are on your own.

Yes, We remember your claim that Turo is breaking the law, and your airport parking lot is full. Thanks.

Turo is good.
Airbnb is good.
Hilton/Hyatt/Marriott are good.

Better ratio of good P2P options:
Turo: Owner is an All-Star
Airbnb: Owner is a Superhost or 'Guest favorite'

For all of them, you need to read the reviews because there are good ones and bad ones.

I have a friend who was renting several of his cars with Turo. A renter got into an accident with a mountain goat, and the car was damaged. My friend failed to gain adequate compensation to fix the car. He stopped renting through Turo. Yes, where we live in Kona, I've witnessed Turo renters walking through the airport and other parking lots looking for their rental. The KOA airport raised their daily rate to $24 per day, and this seems to have slowed down the illegal use.

Outlier case, probably multiple of them but a small percentage compared to the whole.

There are alternate insurance for car renters. Use to know of some of them but deleted the tabs a long time ago.

Turo has rule(s) about not leaving rented cars at the airports. Some hosts following the rules (they all should) and park at offsite parking that has shuttles, etc...

Really? That's a solution? I have to pay $24 a day because criminals have taken over our airport? Despicable! They need to arrest every Turo renter or rentee to shut down this crap. "Slowed down" is not enough.

For clarity, it is a misdemeanor crime in Hawaii to use public property for commercial activity. The police have recently been citing people selling on the roadsides and I think and hope this is related to cracking down on the Turo idiots. I know a few people in law enforcement and my understanding is that shutting down Turo on public property is a priority. I doubt renters will get cited but I would not be surprised if they get stranded after their Turo rental gets towed.
