Hi, I got referred here from Savingadvice.com and look forward to learning strategies to get the most out of early retirement.

Background: DW is 5 years older than me and retiring at the end of 2025. I'd like to retire in 2026 so we can do activities together, but am nervous about all the rules. Like the best time to take out Roth, 401k, SS, etc. Also how to get health insurance between retirement and medicare.

I don't expect answers to those. I'll be browsing topics throughout this site and tap into the lessons learned from others.

Thanks!!!!

Welcome aboard, JoeP. I think your approach is a good one. Read a bunch of threads that seem interesting and then you'll be able to ask more precise questions to help you get where you want to be. But you can also just start a thread to ask any question. We were all new here at one time, and we learned a lot just by asking.

Welcome to the Forum, Joe P. You may want to get familiar with the search function for specific topics. Feel free to ask questions. We love to help but we are not experts (at least not paid experts) so use your own judgment or hire professional assistance if appropriate.

If you have some time and wish to evaluate your retirement financial readiness, consider using FIRECalc.

Welcome neighbor! I’m also in Rochester. I retired at 58 in 2022 and loving it! Lots to learn on this forum.

Welcome aboard ! I grew up just outside of Rochester in a suburb to the west.
Great forum, jump in and ask questions.

Welcome, JoeP!

+1 on Koolau's advice to get familiar with the search function. Browsing is also nice. :)

Welcome to the ER Forum JoeP,

Everyone has to start somewhere.

Two links that many have found helpful with their retirement planning process are Frequently Asked Questions and FireCalc (also noted by Koolau above).

Best regards,

MarieIG

Welcome to the forum, its a great place to learn and share.

Welcome!

Rochester NY or Mn?

I know a couple that each of their parents lived in Rochester. One set was Rochester, NY, and the other Rochester, MN. It confused me for so long.

I spent five years at the University of Rochester in the 1980s. It was a beautiful city with great people, and I had a great time there.

People still drinking that Genny Cream Ale up there?

I visit my in-laws in that area from time to time. I generally chug me some Genny Screamers for sentimental reasons (as this was my preferred cheap brew in teens/20's age).

I take it you like snow?

I did stay there in the summer and agree it's a beautiful area. But locals told of horror stories of lake-effect snow. Not for me but YMMV.
