I think I’ve finalized my prep for our ice storm warning so I’ll take Koolau’s advice and write my “Hi, I am”. I and my wife are 62 and 60 respectively. We both retired within 1 day of each other in spring of 2020 and built a home in the north Georgia mountains in 2023. We are engineering/IT types who finished our careers in Atlanta after stops in Texas, North Carolina and finally Georgia, though both originally from Ohio. Our 2 daughters are married and independent with great great careers in engineering and medical.

We have started pulling from our tax deferred accounts in 2025 after living off of deferred income and savings for our first 4 years I haven’t started social security but will sometime between 65 and 70 with wife starting at 62. I’ll also have a small non-COLA pension which will start around age 65. We have a roughly $2m 65/35 portfolio and are weaning ourselves off a FA who we used for the last year for consolidation of multiple accounts from multiple employers.

My name on this site is “505050” which came about when my wife asked me, “so how long do we need to work like this?” This happened when she turned 50. I never thought about it and had always kept my head down, worked hard, saved and didn’t think about it much. Not smart. Started spending time researching and this site became my favorite and introduced me to firecalc and other tools and knowledge. What came out of time was our plan, 505050. At age 50, we would work 50 more month (turned into 60) and bridge our deferred and savings for 50 months until we start to pull from our tax deferred IRAs.

One goal in retirement is travel and are over 60% finished with the National parks coupled with various international trips. This board has been instrumental in helping achieve these goals and is a big part of helping us stay on track. I’m amazed by the breadth of knowlege and topics from the members here.

welcome fellow North Georgian!. I grew up in North Ga.but moved around a bit from ATL to California. Back home now from my last house in SAV to Marietta. You will love the people on this site, very honest and smart. Yes, like you I just got back from the Publix stocking up for the ice!! Lets keep the lights on.

Thanks 505050 for the great introduction. You are most welcome on the Forum! It sounds like your retirement plan has been w*rking well for you. We look forward to hearing more from you about your Early Retirement journey.

Welcome to our wonderful forum. Hope to see more posts from you.

Welcome!

I didn't know Georgia had mountains. I had to look that up. Looks beautiful. I need to get out there some time.

Welcome! We hiked the Cloudland Canyon State Park, GA in the tri-state area...beautiful area. I'd like to revisit. btw...from Columbus...looks like your weather will not be much better than OH for this weekend. (Lucky I'm in Orlando as we hit 80s and OH hits single digits)

Welcome! I’m in Decatur, moved here from NJ 29 years ago. Love hiking the GA mountains. This friendly forum is outstanding on many fronts … the collective knowledge about everything under the sun never ceases to amaze me. Kudos to the mods for keeping it positive!

Welcome to the forum, look forward to hearing more from you!

…And home to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail
I can see Mount Oglethorpe, the original starting point of Appalachian Trail, from our neighborhood. It’s since been moved to Springer Mountain. This area totally surprised me but I’m sure the Covid shutdown forced many of us to explore more locally. Not a bad spot to retire but doesn’t stop us from visiting every part of the US we can😀.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of great info and folks here.

I am in Johns Creek, GA (ATL suburb) with 3 more years until retirement.

Welcome to the forum! We are in Canton, GA. I hope you fare well with this storm.

Welcome to the forum. We’re in Canton having moved here from Johns Creek 4 years ago. (Small world) Love the mountains and trout streams around Dahlonega

Congrats! Almost with you in 2 days and 4hours ! Hope to be on the lake then in two months below you in Hartwell Ga . Wife left a month before me to decorate the house we purchased last year and avoid the cold snow up North . She is getting blamed for bringing the Pa mountian weather with her from the pictures she is sending me.

Welcome! I’m from coastal Georgia, and it’s amazing to me how different my accent is to native Georgians up in the beautiful mountains. Send pics, lol.

Dahlonega. There's an Ashley McBryde song about that small town called A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega that's pretty cool. Look it up if you don't already know it. I've been to a couple of her concerts and then coincidently my company ended up with a job renting a bunch of marine equipment on a lake near there. So, then I really listened to the song a lot.

We immigrated to the U.S. in 1991. After extensive research for IT job opportunities, warm weather, lower exposure to natural disasters, and a reasonable cost of living, the northern suburbs of Atlanta came out on top.
We’ve lived in the same subdivision ever since.
After traveling to 49 states and around the world, it’s still number one for us. If we had to start over, it would still be our first choice.
Now in our late 60s, healthcare has become a priority. Being able to reach a hospital quickly and access excellent doctors with minimal driving matters more than ever.
We’re not moving anytime soon.
The Chattahoochee River is just a mile from our home, offering great hiking and water sports. We love hiking, and North Georgia is truly an amazing place. See several great hikes (here).

Nice to meet you @505050. Hope to hear from you often.

Hello and welcome. Did you choose rural GA for the cost of living? I'm strongly considering rural TN as a replacement for my wonderful place in Jupiter, FL. A bigger home has 1/3 the tax, 10% the insurance costs and other benefits.
