How cheap can you go?

I have the same breakfast every day. It costs me 40 cents for 2 packets of store brand instant oatmeal.

Breakfast is black coffee made at home - but I haven't calculated the price.
Haven't eaten breakfast for many years now...

Never eat anything after 530 to high noon the next day.
I don't eat breakfast to practice intermittent fasting. I drink black coffee with no sugar, no milk due to lactose intolerance and diabetes prevention. It's not about saving money.

I do occasionally eat some snack after dinner though.

Breakfast is usually two cups of coffee with a bit of cream and an RX protein bar, a protein shake or cereal.
Probably our least expensive meal.

When I splurge on breakfast it is:

Apple fritter, $1.49, local grocery store bakery item
6 oz. apple juice, $.35
8 oz. 2% milk, $.20
=======
$2.04

Another breakfast of mine:
1 egg plus liquid egg whites, $.70
1 piece toast, buttered and jelly $.17
6 oz. orange juice $.60
====
$1.47

Speaking of how cheap one can get, during the Great Recession, a poster kept making jokes (taunts?) by posting photos of shacks like this. I also do not remember his screen name.

$4/lb for top sirloin? I have not seen prices like this for a long time. Grocers around here sell scrappy ground beef for more than that.

PS. Spoke too soon. Just looked on the Web out of curiosity. The local Safeway is offering petite sirloin for $3.97/lb. My wife usually keeps track of grocery costs. And she kept the two big fridges (30 and 26 cf) full to the gill. Way more than we can eat.

I really like the Rx Blueberry bar with my morning coffee.

Considering store bought (and lousy) ground beef is $7.99 a pound, I'd say your ground sirloin roast is cheap.

Eggs and sausage and free senior coffee (unlimited refills) is $2.92 at Whataburger.
Seriously? Wow. One just opened up within 3 miles of were I live...I'll have to check it out. I haven't eaten at Whataburger since I lived in Houston over 3 decades ago. My wife is too picky so I guess I'll have to go alone :)

For lunch today, I made a panini with ham and cheese. Finish it off with a banana. Don't know how much it cost, but I can still afford it. :)

The most "expensive" breakfast I eat at home is 3 strips of bacon (about $1) 2 eggs (about $.30), and an orange $.50 - $.65). I eat that about once a week. Otherwise it is usually a cup of tea ($.18 but I could get cheaper) and an orange or 2.. Sometimes a mug of hot chocolate ($.34).

DW normally eats oatmeal, yogurt, and a banana for breakfast That big box of Quaker Oats lasts a looong time Th Kirkland Greek Yogurt is relatively cheap as well for the amount of servings DW gets from an container.

Maybe once every 2 month DW will cook up a batch of homemade pancakes and the sometimes I will a couple each day for breakfast over the course of a week or so.

Every so often I will remember to BTD and fix up steak and 3 eggs for breakfast. Living the life! 😂

Its'not that I am cheap. I just don't like waste or even excess.

I couldn't feed a small dog on our table scraps.

I have a huge garden that feeds us, along with wild game and fish that I gather from my hobbies.

I didn't do the math, but I know I would be money ahead buying it all instead. But, its' not as fun.

I had the panini lunch late today, because we ran an errand.

After my curiosity was piqued by the OP getting top sirloin for $4, and I surfed the Web to find there was $4 petite sirloin from my local Safeway, I told my wife of the good deal. She said, "But I already told you about it, and you never paid any attention". There's no good deal that escapes my dear wife's attention.

I meekly protested, "You know, I was busy looking to sell covered calls, so did not remember".

She then asked, "Are you going to the store with me, or I can go alone". I thought I was already done with selling calls for today, so wanted to get out of the house too.

On the way, my wife said, "We need to go to the ATM for some cash, so might as well stop by Fry's to get some food stuff. Plus, they mailed me a coupon for a free dozen eggs". I said, "What? I thought eggs are expensive". She said "Yeah, but this deal is for their preferred customers". I thought everybody was their preferred customer, but that did not matter. And the coupon said free large or extra large eggs. Not jumbo eggs, but why would anyone choose large instead of extra large, I wonder.

Back home at 1PM. While waiting on the panini, I fired up the laptop to look at the brokerage screen. UH OH! The market turned back down to where it was at open. Big losses for me today.

I was scared, so sold more OTM covered contracts to get more cash. Well, I lied because I was not scared (not yet), and I sold covered contracts when I liked it, whether I was scared or not. This belongs in another thread, but might as well tell y'all about it here. After lunch and the trades, the market closed, and I needed to go out to the backyard for my daily chores, so just got back in the house now.

In any event, it looks like food prices are going down. Or am I mistaken?

By the way, the petite sirloin on sale was not marbled and may not make good steak. But to turn it into ground beef or stew meat is quite all right. In the past, once I was surprised when it turned out to be nice tender steak.

I think that might have been MasterBlaster. He last visited the forum in 2022.

I couldn't find any of his posts with the shanty shacks, but I always thought they were amusing.

^^^^ Yes. Your memory is superior to mine. He always posted something like this along with the photo: "Retire early now. The good life awaits you. "
