How do you arrange Tools in Your Garage ?

I like to make wood toolboxes, so most of my tools reside in these. I know it's not the best for shop organization, but so be it. I do store some in a Craftsman roller box also. And Milwaukee packouts for the road.

When I moved my woodworking shop from one home to another, I pre-planned the placement of all my tools. I had measured drawing, plans, layouts, the whole thing. Here we are years later and I have everything in my shop laid out exactly where it needs to be..............but it currently has no resemblance to those original plans.

Mechanics tools all are in a cabinet under workbench. One toolbox sits on workbench. Saws are n the corner all covered in plastic. Shelving unit holds totes for painting, gardening, bicycle, plumbing specific tools and spare parts. Everything easy to find. Guys who work on house even know how to locate if they need something.

I am not an organized person when Tools and Handy Stuff around the house are concerned.
I usually call out/ hire people to help us out with odd jobs.

That said, I still try to organize stuff & some tools, billion nails etc… in the Garage so that two mid sized SUVs fit in the Garage.

I wonder how other people organize their tools ? I understand every one does that in his/her own way.

You tube videos show very neatly arranged garages, I do not know how real or true those videos are.

How do our forum members arrange their tools for small kind of in house jobs ??

Thank you
Those YouTube garages are usually cleaned for the camera lol. Pegboard for frequently used tools, clear bins for random stuff, and one drawer just for screws and nails saved me a ton of frustration. Doesn't need to look pretty, just needs to let you find things in under 30 seconds.

My experience with pegboard is that it's basically for looking at stuff you rarely use. I hate it for stuff I would use regularly. Every time I grab a tool that's on a pegboard wall, whatever those hooks are called that clip into the pegboard come off the wall with the tool and I have to reinsert them before I can hang the tool again.

I blame Martha Stewart for that whole pegboard-for-organizing-tools thing. I'd much rather just have plywood screwed to the wall and screw a bunch of 2-3" drywall screws where I need to hang stuff. Those at least stay in place when I grab my tools.

Also, looking at that photo I just took reminds me that one of my hammers is missing. Where is it? Oh, yeah, with my painting stuff because I used it to hammer down the lid on the last paint can I used last month.

Beautiful shops and organized arrangements you folks have. I'm no help to OP question but got some great advise.
I have tools in old base and cabinets outlined on three wall partially. A work bench built on top of 10 feet of base cabinets. The drawers and base compartments work for me but still not organized all that great.

Always a work in progress. I don't have tons of tools, but more than I need. In my garage I have pegboard, a small rolling cabinet, a rack of Costco bins, and a wall mounted set of small bins for screws, nails, hooks, etc. I also have a toolbox that has the basics that I can grab for most small jobs.

Thank you every one, I am getting on with my little project of arranging the Tools I have. I realize I have not used the ones I have for so long.

Thank you again !

I picked up one of these today, to store a few hand tools in the house and save a few trips to the detached garage. Seems heavy for it's small size and solid. I like it especially for the price.

I'd really like some of the bigger tool cabinets and chests to replace the wood drawers and maybe plastic shelves I'm using. Some of them are really nice, but you could easy spend a few thousand $$$$ on them. Later if i get motivated and have time I'll start searching FB Mktplace and Craigslist for deals.

Mostly random arrangement, some stuff hung on pegboard, others in in tool box.
Helps keep brain memory cells functtion as to where I put the thing the last time I used it. Often enough it ends up in the usual spot.
Then again most tools have sufficient triplicates to cover memory fade.

I got tired of hunting down tools in DH space (the garage), so I bought myself my own tool box. It's pink and all the tools I filled it with are also pink. No One is supposed to use it except me-lol.
I went out the other day and couldn't find my hammer:mad:.
DH had it in his shed, the stinker. He couldn't find his! He kind of got an ear full from me.

I use painted tool outlines and embed magnets, using polarity to assure the tools are properly aligned.

Not.

many tools for many purposes, lots of them because they are cool and I like them, not because they are of any use.

Timely thread as I'm just cleaning and organizing my Craftsman red rolling toolbox like the one on page 1 with all those "92" decals. It's so full I can't close a couple drawers and hasn't been organized in years and a couple moves ago. Often used tools have migrated to shelves next to the toolbox. It's in my garage but I have tools that aren't used very often in the basement. I put shovels, broom, and rakes in a large plastic trash can. I have a few extra large plastic trash cans since the place we moved to 14 years ago requires trash to be put in plastic bags. I store potting soil in another trash can. Fortunately I have a 2 car garage and only one car. The garage will get a good cleanout after I take a bunch of stuff to the scrap metal dealer later this month. Love the organization shown in several of the posted pix.
