The wife and I were debating this the other night (better than fighting about debt, heh) After 2 1/2yrs of marriage she wants to buff our checking because it freaks me out when it dips and then I complain about our spending. Of course, I see this as a good thing because it only happens when money's getting pissed away.

Both of us have pretty safe jobs. I've tiered what we're doing basically in the order we'd access it:

Checking: 22%
ING Direct: 15%
Non-qual Conservative MF: 12%
Cash Value Life Ins: 41%
Former Employer Stock (sentimental): 10%

We're obvioulsy looking to max our Roths (while we can) her 401k, and my SIMPLE. We've got 1yr living expenses in the various accounts, we'd like to upgrade our home in the next 5yrs and not have to borrow to do it. I like using utilities and balanced MF for this, she wants to dump it into checking.
