How long it took to get your first Social Security check

I applied 3 months before I turned 70 last year, to begin when I turned 70. My first check was direct deposited on the day it was supposed to be deposited, and my Medicare premium had been deducted. I had paid a quarterly Medicare payment prior to that, and a few months later, I received a paper reimbursement check for my overpayment. BTW, my first check amount was just as the S.S. estimator had predicted.

Great, thanks! Looks like we’re on the right track. We’ve been paying Medicare premiums monthly because we’re subject to IRMAA. So it looks like we can expect a clean handover.

I waited nearly 3 hours today to get a hold of a social security rep. It took about 10 minutes after to find out I have to call a Miss Robinson. They gave me her number and extension. I will call on Thursday.

They said I was sent an email to contact that person which I remembered but deleted it as Social Security says they never contact you except by mail. I even got an email from them today that said "National Slam the Scam Day" with tips on how to spot a scam.

There was a question on where I was born. I explained where and they said I may end up having to send them a Minnesota birth certificate that has been notarized. I do have a copy and I filled out a form from the Minneapolis office.

I asked them if they already had all the information and she said yes but need to verify.
She also said it takes 100+ days.....

The day for deposits this month has come and gone with nothing for the young wife, so I guess we'll need to call them up.

Sorry to hear that. Did you ever receive an award letter listing a date when her benefits should start?

Since you applied before the new law abolishing GPO/WEP was signed, you could have been rejected because of your pension amount for spousal benefits. Can you clarify which application was rejected? What did your SS online account say about each application result?
Thanks for your response. I dd not do two applications. Ugh! The letter came and it says I only have 39 credits. I checked my IRS files and they are correct, even though they sent me an email that I had 40.

I only did one application for myself. I added my spouse information and I thought it would cover my spousal claim.

Should I start a new claim for spousal? Or use the appeal process to explain I wanted spousal?

I'll try to call but who knows if I can reach a live person.

I am at my snowbird location, so it might get more confusing if I go into an office.

The checks will be coming.

I called and left a voice mail for Miss Robinson.
Then I called right afterward the main # and was connected right away with a guy who said the problem was that I put Canoga Park (where I am now) as my place of birth instead of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He said they will be sending out my December & January checks by the end of the month. 😁
He was very fast no nonsense person. The whole time he was sniffling. He said he had allergies.
3/hrs yesterday on hold and today the call was over and done with in less then 5 minutes!

Nope. Website just says it's in Stage 2.

Same here, being reviewed by an agent in Baltimore. My birthday (70) was on the 10th of this month so I’m hoping to start receiving payments in March or April.

I turn 70 this November and was planning to wait until then or even January 2026 because I think they will go back and I don't really want any more income in 2025.

However, I'm wondering if my filing end up requiring any degree of human intervention, will there be people there to do it and whether it will take longer because there are less people.

As a result, perhaps I should file now and after I turn 70 withdraw, pay back what I received and then restart my benefits with an age 70 start date so I get full benefits.

Of course, there may not be people around to do that either.

Social Security was quick to deposit my money in my bank account. I just received 2 months for December & January after talking to a person in the office on Thursday when I asked about a delay due to my putting in the wrong city for my birth.
I will receive a new deposit on the 18th every month.

Good to hear it was resolved.

So, for people who got their first SS check, was your Medicare premium deducted from that first check?

When you got the email outlining the details of your first check, did it include details on the Medicare premium deduction? This email is usually sent late during your start month for the check that will be deposited the following month.

Thanks!
Yes. My 1st deposit included the Part B deduction.

I received by first payment yesterday (a day early) as promised. I applied in early November, got a recognition by email about 3 days later (Stage 1), then was advanced to Stage 2 (pending) in early December. I was about to call the end of the 2nd week in January to Check when I got a phone message to call a particular SS employee. Did so the next Monday and turned out the issue was whether to take it in Jan or Feb (January was the FRA). Was told the check would come Feb 25 and had a notice a few days later that I was accepted and had a benefit letter.
Went rather easily, all told.
We're still debating whether younger DW should take hers early or not. I could just squirrel the payments away in the brokerage investments, I guess, or do Roth conversions.
