We've had four residences in 56-years of marriage:

- First apartment (2+ years)
- Second apartment (2+ years)
- First single-family home (13+ years)
- Current single-family home (38-years in August)

4 single-family homes purchased in my lifetime. Lived in all 3 except the first one, which was purchased as a rental investment property and was sold years ago. I still own the 3 remaining homes: 2 became rentals after I moved from them, and the last most recent one has been my home for the last 36 years.

Does my motorhome count? Just kidding.

We did live in it for 5 years after we sold our primary home.

We bought our one and only home 32 years ago this month. It might have been late March actually but know we closed and moved in first week of May 1994.

3 for me. I try and move about every 10-15 years to keep me under the profit threshold, so I don't have to pay capital gains tax.

Looks like I am the outlier at 10. We made money on 8 of the 9 we sold. Never paid cap gains because we always met the exemption. We built 4 of the 10. The oldest was from 1926. The newest is our current having just been built. We’ve had really bad construction and really good construction. About half have been in HOA’s which we still prefer. 3 of the homes were the result of moves to different states. 2 were the result of moves to different towns within our current state. The last being our retirement town.

This thread makes you think about all these moves, but over the time they took place, they all just made sense for us.

It counts! At least as far as I'm concerned.
(35-seasons traversing the US and Canada in 3-motor homes)
OK, changed my vote!

Interestingly we have a new home that we are getting ready to move into. Had it built, and it’s bought, just haven’t moved in yet.

I said 4, but it's complicated. The rental I occupy on the mainland used to be owned by me (as part of a corporation). I rented the house from the corporation. So I'm not counting that house.

We immigrated to the U.S. 35 years ago. At first, we bought a 3,200 sq. ft. house after living abroad in a 1,200 sq. ft. apartment; it felt enormous at the time.
Eight years later, we moved into a 4,400 sq. ft. home, and since that time it felt just right. We’re still living in it today.

3 for me
#1 ~5 years almost tripled in value
#2 ~8 years barely broke even
#3 ~17 years about doubled in value so far (will be inherited by our kids)

5 for me. Made money on all of them. Owned three of them mortgage-free. Current home is set up for old age and may be our last. Time will tell.

Our largest was 2700 SF and it always felt HUGE!

We are in number 6 and plan on it being the last one. 5 have been as the result of company moves and this last one was our choice, six years after retirement.

4 have been in England, 1 in Scotland and 1 in Louisiana. We did spend 14 years in Texas over 2 periods but rented each time.

Two.

First was a condo, and we set a record for highest purchase price in the condo. When we sold it four years later, we set another record—for highest sales price.

Recently sold our second property, a new construction view home that we lived in for 33 years. Sad to lose that unmatched view.

Now renting until our CCRC spot opens up.

Only one. Lots of different apartment and house rentals, then bought a house in 1983 and have stayed there ever since. Likely keep it until we move to a CCRC or apartment when we tire of house maintenance.

Although we do spend half our year in France in a flat connected to our daughter's place.

You also never paid realtor, movers and mortgage company right?

Number 3 for is. Lots of moving, lots of renting.

Our current primary residence is the longest I’ve ever lived in one place in my life.
