How much to spend on an engagement ring?

Almost 3 yr old thread, so hopefully he is married by now.
My fiance loves jewelry. Got her a 2.5ct beautiful ring for 28k. She stares at it everyday.
I'd be too nervous to wear something like that for fear I'd lose it or someone would attack me to get it. . .

Understand that. Losing it is covered by full insurance for higher appraised amount.
As for any attacks, we are very aware of our surroundings. Of course anything can happen anywhere.

I suggest asking her close female family members and friends for advice. Keep an open mind to options like repurposing a family heirloom ring or incorporating her birthstone; things like that can add greatly to the sentimental value.

Came to this tread a few years late, but reading this bring back some great memories. When we met, DW was 19 and was/is the most beautiful lady I have ever met. I was 26 and broke. DW accepted a $45 ring because that was all I could afford. She now owns 100% of me, our 2 kids and our NW. She is not into investment forums, so she will never read this. She will never understand how much I appreciate having her by my side all these years.

I spent $350 for the ring and band 52 years ago.

I read an article in the UK press two weeks ago that the price of diamonds is dropping fairly quickly.

The drop is apparently based on less demand and on a seeming preference for lower cost lab diamonds.

I forgot to mention: Diamonds are about a billion years old, yet many people insist on buying "new" diamonds at expensive retail jewelry stores.

You can get a much better buy on diamonds, other gems, and settings at a reputable estate-jewelry seller, or as we like to call it, "Dead People's Used Jewelry."
I found out about dead people jewelry by accident and got some really nice sapphire/gold hoop earrings. I like that they had another life before me. I would go look at more, but I do not need jewelry, I don't wear what I have now.

Back in college in New Mexico I was reclaiming some pottery clay from a slop bucket; drying and wedging it. As I worked the clay I found a turquoise ring buried. Posted notices in the pottery studio and small school bulletin board - no response. Maybe four years later met this gal in Oregon. After a bit of time learned she did wheel thrown pottery. Santa Fe story was that turquoise should be given for maximum benefit to the wearer. Gave her the ring, which fit and which she has worn for the past 47 years. Could be something to Native wisdom, though in this case I've been the recipient of the benefit.
Feel lucky not to have had dollars play any part.

Every woman I know instinctively moves her stones around to the inside of her hand if she finds herself in an area that gives any cause for concern.

For the rest, there's insurance.

Guess I"m the only one that lives in a slum where kids are attacked for their phones . . . . etc. Not daily of course but not rare either. It is a big city . . . a lot of sh*t goes down.
