For example, how do I tell the forum software that I don't want the text TL ; DR (without the spaces before and after the semicolon) to be converted to TL:DR? Is there some tag I can wrap around the semicolon and capital D to make it appear just as a plain text semicolon capital D? I tried using the "inline code" widget, but it adds a pale, translucent blue box around the text. I just want completely plain, normal, un-emojified text.

I just either put in the extra space, or, more often, leave it and let people figure it out.

You can use lower case letters. tl;dr

You can also use uppercase with forward slash instead of semicolon. TL/DR

Yes, I was thinking of using the slash to get around this particular issue with the semicolon, but was wondering if there was a more general purpose solution to the problem. So should I assume (based on the responses so far) that there isn't a way to do this generally?

I wouldn’t assume anything. There may be a better approach, I was just looking for a quick workaound.
