I Bought a Refurbished Win 11 Computer

I'm more worried about it moving Quicken 2016 and MS Office 2003 (which I can't find the disks/keys for.) Book marks can usually be exported/imported - I've done that a few times with Fire Fox.
Bookmarks was just one example (I know it's an easy thing to export/import them). What I as saying is that like moving to a new house, may be better to just not bring everything along.

On that we can agree - I've thought about reinstalling everything, but I've had this one for 9 years and don't have access to all the stuff I need. I will likely be removing a lot of "crap" before I do any transfer.

I though I had the oldest dinosaur in Office 2007 on my old WIN 10 machine! When I looked over the programs on the old machine, I decided to go for new software. I rarely use Office anyway as I have LibreOffice instead. In any event, you can pick up new(er) versions of Office cheap online and they do work fine. For example, Office Professional Plus (2021) for under $12. If you want the 2024 version it's $30. I already decided not to use Acronis True Image since my current version is from 2020 and I haven't even checked to see if it works well with WIN 11. I got the 2023 version of Corel Videostudio for the new PC as the old machine had the 2017 version. I may end up getting a newer version of Corel Paint Shop Pro as the old PC has the 2018 version. The data is easy to transfer since it's on a separate drive from the OS/programs drive in both old and new PC's

I do have the CD for OFFice 97 and 5 1/4 floppies for Office 4 (before 95. :) My main things are Adobe photo Deluxe from 1999 and Quicken 2016. I cabget by with Libre Office if I have to. I also do not want to use a Microsoft account on the new W11 machine so will create a local account as usual. I bought the old win10 PC in 2016 and it was an off lease PC then from 2012. Still runs great an does what I need. My old dinosaur 2008 Win7 laptop can no longer access the Schwab website. It still runs great also.

We have a great electronic repair store less than a mile from us. A year+ ago my laptop died. The guy checked it for free and said it would cost about $200, I said no thanks and told him I would buy a cheap new laptop.
He told me why not buy a refurbished business laptop which is bulid much stronger, that costs over $1000 new for just $250 . He also gave me a 3-month warranty, and/or I can give it back within 30 days.
This laptop came with win 11 + Libre office that replaced Office. I loved it so much, I bought another one for my wife.
Two weeks before, I also bought a refurbished Pixel 6A for $180 instead of over $500. It's over a year now, and it works great.
I never bought refurbished, but a new world opened for me.

This post reminds me of the day of software shopping at a place like Circuit City or at a computer show. Nerd alert. I remember spending hours reading the back of the CDs and boxes of the descriptions of the software. I don't even know if computer shows exist anymore. I would drive about 20 miles, wait in line, then look for bargains. At the very least, I'd end up stocking up on a bunch of cheap blank CDs so my trip wasn't all for nothing.

I'm looking at this one: $239 My current one I bought as a refurb in 2016. Added an SSD (big improvement!) and replaced the power supply. Good litte box. W10 pro so this will allow time to get it set up.

$239 for Prime users. I used the sis-in-laws Prime. It arrived late yesterday. I'll begin setting it up today using a local account rather than a Microsoft account. It's been 9 years this month since I last set up a new PC :)

Got my refurbished computer a few days ago but only opened up the box today.

Before even powering on, the my first order of business is to clone to original drive. This way, I can always have that to go back to if needed. The cloning device is niffy.

Quicken 2016 (and 2017, which I have) did not have license keys, the install signed onto the Quicken site with your Quicken ID. However, that sign on function is now defunct, you get a blank screen. However, I found a potential workaround (which also applies to Quicken 2016) that worked for me here : Blank Quicken Id window . This worked for me to install Quicken 2017 on a new Windows 11 system.

The link above have the patches for older Quicken versions, but unfortunately not the installation media... without that it is expensive, as the only place I see it available is on eBay but the prices are high ($130+). If you purchased Quicken 2016 as a download from someplace that still exists (like Amazon), it *might* still be there under your account

I do have the install files and patches (2016 H&B) on the HD. On this PC (the old one), I have blocked Quicken from accessing the network for several years, as well as on a couple others and Q16 still works on all 3. I'm hoping that PCMover (laplink) will move it to the new PC intact and functioning. I remember a few years back when people got locked out of Quicken - fortunately, I was not one of them. I'm sure I can get around any Office 2003 issues.

As for the blank Quicken ID window, I see that everytime I add a new stock symbol but it is easy to get around it.

I went ahead and jumped in the pool. Fired up my newly bought refurbished Win 11 desktop computer.
More specifically, a HP G2 H4 Workstation. I was hoping to first get into the BIOS or do a one time boot from a usb to make an image of the Hard Drive (I do have the original. I'm running from a cloned HDD). But despite pressing the Esc keys and/or F10 or F9 keys that is supposed to work, no luck. Now I'm kind of wishing I got a Dell.

So, okay, can't do the initial image and am doing the Win 11 setup for a "new" computer and thinking this feels a bit intrusive. I cough up my Microsoft account sign in. The I get asked questions like what do I want share, for settings, ads and such. I picked to not share.

Think I will need some patience .

Could it be that you needed to do what is described as method 2 in this link:

You can do it with Clonezilla, you need to boot into the live Clonezilla CD / USB and do a disk to disk clone. Usually BIOS startup Escape or F8 or F10 will let you change your boot drive temporarily.

Mine is F2 or the Delete key. I guess there’s no standard.

I just finished setting up my new mini PC yesterday and some this morning. I did not use my Microsoft account but set it up as a local account. Used PCMover to move apps and data over. ($30 well spent, IMO) Took about an hour using the direct cable method. Overall it worked well. Moved over Quicken 2016, Office 2003, Adobe Photo Deluxe, Mailwasher and Thunderbird + others with all the settings intact. All programs seem to run fine.

No luck for me. Think I'm going to return this HP computer and look for a different brand.

Was a headache. I couldn't get to the BIOS but pressing the ESC or function keys like it should. In Windows 11 I was able to try and do a restart and boot select boot at start up that way. So, I did that to choose my USB (with Ventoy installed as a bootable USB). So, it boots to Ventoy but they they keyboard can't make a selection. No good. So I see if it can even boot off a DVD. Try that at no luck, goes to Windows.

Not only that, but the PC has 16GB of ram and seems slow.

I just upgraded to 2 TB from 1 TB on my refurb with an i7 8700 processor. I like to run virtual machines so the extra space will support that.

I had a PC that needed an older keyboard to get to BIOS.

Is the keyboard wired USB?

Never a fan of HP computers.

You mean you needed a non-use keyboard? I was using a wired USB keyboard.

Water under the bridge now as I boxed up and dropped off already for return.

I'm not a fan of HP either and have avoided them for some time.

Pretty happy so far with the $239 new BeeLink I just picked up to replace an HP i5 from 2012. Created a local account it during startup ( No $%^&* Mircosoft account) and used PCMover (LapLink) to move everything over.

Glad the move worked out for you. I'm back to square one refurbished computer hunting.

I was looking for another refurb when a friend recommended the new BeeLink and said he has a couple of them. Thought I'd give it a try.

I realized I'm totally out of touch when comes to desktop computers.

When looking, hardly any has optical drives anymore. The ones that do are mounted sideways. I don't even know how a CD/DVD loads onto a sideways CD/DVD burner.

Put the CD in and it loads OK. A lot of people have external CD/DVD player/burners. The only thing I used the CD in the desktop I just replaced was to load the Turbo Tax CD and now they don't make those anymore.
