I Didn't Retire, I Graduated!

After retiring/graduating from mega corp we bought a small farm. I always smile when I get in my truck to head to the farm and my phone tells me there is light traffic to work. If it only knew how much fun I was having it wouldn't think I was going to work!
Heh, heh, I had uncles who w*rked farms. Not much traffic, but they weren't often happy about heading to the farm. I guess it all depends on whether your living depends on if it's more of a hobby. Glad you can enjoy your time on the farm.

Still showing up for the paycheck... but dang I cannot wait to step away from the workforce!

I remember watching a series on folks who won the lotteries... one of the couples were long time farmers of 35 years... after they won they interviewed the husband and he looked at his wife, smiled and said "Honey, we're selling the hogs!"

Perspective.

There was a couple that w*rked at the same company I did who won a $12 million lottery. The local newspaper interviewed the wife (who was pregnant) and asked her what they were going to do with the money. She thought about it and replied, "Curtains. We're definitely getting new curtains for the house." And the husband continued w*rking until the baby was born to keep the insurance. I knew then that they'd be okay and not broke in 18 months.

Yeah, one of the guys at our plant won a Million. He kept w*rking. He realized that after taxes, it was a nice step toward early retirement but it wasn't a fortune - even in the late 80s.

I think I like the term graduated, though I probably would not use it apart from this board.

Due to my circumstances, retirement felt a bit like giving up or surrendering. So I am working on trying to see it in more positive terms.

I remember an old movie once that had a teenage character everyone assumed was a drop out. People looked down on him based on this assumption. At the end of the film, you find out he graduated at 16.

I feel like there is a tendency to treat people who retire early as dropouts from the workplace. I feel saying we graduated from work early is more fitting.

I'm in the camp that says Early Retirement is to be celebrated and not looked down upon. It suggests that you have excelled in the preparation required to reach Financial Independence.

I have never felt the need to justify my decision to Retire Early.

In any case, it's no one else's business but yours unless you wish to share the information with others.

Celebrate!

And a million ain’t what it used to be.

Ain't it the truth! My first million was much more of a rush than the second and it was worth a lot more at the time as well!
