Well, my thoughts are to retire on May 31 although I keep thinking I should not do it. But it was just announced that OPM may start sending emails tonight offering buyouts. When that happens people are usually out within days. The only drawback is that with a buyout people cannot re-employ with the federal government or work as a contractor for 5 years without having to repay the full amount of the buyout. I may have to say 'no' if I get a buyout offer unless they also offer waiver for that restriction.

Trump administration to offer buyouts to all federal workers ahead of return to office

Do you really want to keep working? Even as a contractor, it's still work.

I was thinking of working for 1 year while collecting the FERS pension to save extra money to buy my mom's house that I would like to use for vacation rental income.

If you are that close to ER I would take the buy out immediately. Regardless of the restriction. I would just find another job if it were me.

Yeah, I am doing some hard thinking tonight. Funny thing is that I was talking to my two supervisor employees about the prospects of a buyout this morning.

However, I don't think they will offer me the buyout. I am the division director. They will need to backfill the position if I leave. With the buyout they are not allowed to back fill it.

I doubt enough thought has gone into this "buyout" to establish any sort of "position priority". The administration is looking for numbers and not concerned with preserving ongoing operations. Of course Congress hasn't passed budget with money for a buyout so I'm not sure how this would be funded.

I will take it. If it was real and fair, yeah- I think I would say bye-bye. My BS bucket overflowed today. I am in exactly the right mood for an offer like this. But of course, I won't get it.

I had been used to these things while working, but I was working in the private sector. For the federal workers, this would be a very difficult pill to swallow especially if one is in it for the pension promised to Fed workers.

They call it "deferred resignation", whatever that means.

The OPM memorandum dated today, with details of how this deferred resignation program will work.

The first half of the memorandum describes how the program will work (in detail) and the second part of the memorandum is presented in a FAQ/Q&A style.

It just sounds like government-speak.

Am I reading that the buyout is only for employees who do not want to return to work in the office? If so, it would not apply to air traffic controllers anyway since they have to be at the control tower to do their work.

@Buckeye

I was surprised that it answered every question I had about the process. I'm not a federal employee (or an employee of any kind, happily!) but I do try to stay informed about current events. And that is all I'm gonna say about that (ahem). ;)
