As the title says, if I choose a different part D plan for 2026 off of the Medicare.gov site, will my 2025 Part D plan automatically end at the end of the year?

I have Cigna part D for 2025, but they sold to another company, Healthspring, that raised the rates from $7/mo to $56/mo. I found another plan, Wellcare value script, that is $9.60/mo, with the same preferred pharmacies, etc, so would like to switch.

When you apply to the new carrier, the "system" (Medicare) will automatically terminate your existing Plan D at end of the year.

Yes, that's the way the system is designed and has worked for me whenever I have made a change to a different Part D provider. Of course things can and do go wrong, so save a digital copy of all appropriate paperwork just in case.

Interesting that my spouse’s Cigna Part D has a similar 2025 price, but the Healthspring premium drops to nearly $0. California.

Yes.

Medicare.gov takes care of the old plan cancellation.

Yes, Medicare will cancel old plan. (And, of course, if you decided to stay with old plan, you would not have to take any action.)

Had the same plan, but Healthspring will not be in my area. So also switched to Wellcare Value Script but with zero premium.

Yes. My husband is starting Medicare on 12/1 and we chose Cigna for $21/month. Then he got a letter that Cigna/Healthspring would be $71/month starting in January. We found a $0 premium WellCare Part D Plan and signed him up as of 1/1/26. We just got a letter from Cigna saying their part D is canceled for 2026 and it also shows this clearly on the Medicare website 👍
