I'm 25, and I've been working as a federal retirement specialist for 2 years. I know we have some federal employees on here, so if you have any questions about CSRS/FERS/TSP/SS, I can answer them. I can also answer your FEGLI and FEHB questions.
For myself personally, I invest 14% in the TSP (similar to a 401K). I also contributed $3000 to my Roth IRA. I can't afford to save any more than that on my GS-9 salary.
TSP = $8000 (I'm young)
Roth IRA = $12,000
Individual Stocks = $80,000 (thank you, rich grandma)
Money Market = $40,000 (thank you again, rich grandma)
Debt = $0 (thank you parents for paying for my state college)
I'm putting my retirement on auto-pilot right now with the TSP, Roth IRA, SS, and government pension.
My next big financial decision is to buy a new or used car. I'm saving up my money for something in the $10,000 range.
