I'm gonna give it all away...

The Fisher House is another great example of helping people in times of need. I stayed in one with a friend when he needed to go out of state for cancer treatments. It was nice to have a free room and a fully stocked kitchen to eat. It was very quiet and clean. My friend couldn’t drive so I would have to take him and stay for 4 days of treatment.

Thanks all. OP here. The Ronald McDonald House has what I was looking for. I will also look into the Fisher House. (My dad was a very seasoned Army veteran from the WWII - Korea Era) I have taken care of parents that needed medical help a long ways from home for lengths of time. I was fortunate, I was already FIRED and wasn't missing work and could afford a motel. Many others that I got to know at the hospital waiting rooms couldn't.

From what I've seen, those needing medical help in our country usually receive it. The issue that I witnessed was the stress on the primary care givers. The economic loss of time from work, travel expense and cost of staying with a loved one. It is hard enough to watch a loved one suffer without worrying about the economic hardship you're experiencing.

These are the people I am going to seek out and help financially. I don't want to invent something that already exists. The two above mentioned organizations will get my support.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Good for you, Nords! Thank you very much for your generosity. Fortunately, my family has never needed a Fisher House but I know a lot of sailors whose families have.

Best wishes on your health, I hope you get good news in Rochester.

Looks like you've made a great decision. RMD House is the official charity of my employer, Southwest Airlines.

Another idea, related to adoption. My church has a ministry to help families through the adoption process & beyond, with expertise & funding. I imagine many churches have similar ministries.

Those two charities in the OP are excellent choices in my opinion. Obviously, many other possibilities, but you can't go wrong with those.

Sure, hope all is going well with you and giving back is a great thing to do. I wish You the best!!

My Dr gave me some news and it changed my outlook.

I FIRED at 50. Now at 59. No regrets. Healthy as a rented mule til a month or so ago.

Net worth about 9M. most all self made, except $2M inherited...recently and very painfully/

I did inherit some land from the family that the children will inherit. mentioned above. Plus the earnings since the earnings since I got it. I feel guilty.

So. I set my children up well with education and their future inheritance. I live small, about $40,000 a year.

I am thinking about where to give it to. The children will get what I inherited. I want to help those who need it and have no other source (government) to look for.

My mom passed recently and I was exposed to a couple groups who help people in need that I am considering giving it all to. One is the Ronald McDonald House and the other is St Jude's Children's Hospital,

Anyone with any experience with either ?

I am an orphan myself, someone helped me 59 years ago. I want to give it back.

Thanks all.
I didn't read any further than your post before responding. It appears that you have done well with what you were dealt in life. Personally I have a problem with any foundation that can afford lengthy commercials on the tube yet ask for your money. If you truly want to make a difference, and I think you do, then find something that is true to your heart and has a low profile. When I was stationed in Korea many years ago. I stayed during the holidays as the lowest ranking individual in my unit while many of the higher ranking individuals went back to the states to be with their families. While I was doing odds and ends an individual approached me and asked if I would like to contribute to a Korean orphanage a small amount to buy the kids some candy as a Christmas present for the holidays. I was feeling very down and lonely at the time. That one request lifted my heart enormously as I could see that I could do something that made a difference to some children that could mean so much. Do a little research and find what could lift your heart as well as make a real difference to someone. That small effort could could be a spark that ignites the next generation of givers. Pay it forward!
