In honor of Aja, what was your first date? How old and what did you do?

I've mentioned this one before. (Now DW) invited me to a spring dance when we were in 8th grade. Her mom drove us there and then picked us up. What she saw in me, I don't know. I couldn't dance the new dances (I could waltz/foxtrot - but she just followed).

I was 5 feet tall (a cute little boy in my white sport coat) and she was 5' 6" (more like a young woman). My "reputation" in 8th grade went up after that dance!

But we had always been friends (since 2nd grade) and lived a couple of blocks apart. She was our "paper girl" and often stopped in to look around the Family Business. When I asked her out a couple of times subsequently, her parents said "No. Not until 16." So it was not until Junior Year in HS that we started actually dating. My other dates with other girls led nowhere (same for her). By Sr. year we were going steady. (Heh, heh, we've been together "romatically" for over 60 years now).

My first date was not until the 2nd semester of my freshman year of college (in high school I was much too shy to talk much to girls). I was 17. I called a beautiful (big afro, smooth pale skin, big green eyes, lovely face), popular freshman woman whom I had become friendly with, but did not think had any interest in me beyond friendship (the details are more suitable for a "how did you meet and fall in love with your spouse?" thread :) ) just to say hi and share a dumb joke. But she cut me off and said "I can't really talk now - but why don't we go out on a date soon? What movies do you like?" That caught me off guard,

A couple of days later we went to see "Arsenic and Old Lace" that one of the student organizations was showing. I was nervous, but I just tried to be nice and act like a gentlemen (other than a few joking disagreements we had on a few things). After the movie I asked is she wanted to a candy shop to talk for a bit, and she said sure. Though it was crowded, and we could not find two seats together, she asked one of her friends there to move over so that she could sit next to me. Oh la la! After hanging out until after midnight I walked her back to her dorm and thanked her for going out with me. She had I had fun, lets do this again. I gave her a polite hug, she smiled at me, and I walked away on cloud nine.

Years later, DW told me that she asked me out because (a) she did think I was nice, and (b) before I called her, she and her roomates were having a drinking party in their room with a number of other women, and they started going over the good guys and the creepy guys in the freshman class. When my name came up, the consensus that I was a quiet but decent guy they felt safe around, was shy in a cute way (based on several incidents), and that "he probably thinks it would be rude to ask you for a date". She started thinking "hmmm...he seems interesting, but if I don't ask him out, someone else may" - and then I happened to call. She was (in her words) buzzed enough to bluntly ask me for a date. And the rest is his (and her) story...

Great story. Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of DW and me (I was the shy one and she was the one who went after what she wanted).

11th grade. My boss's daughter. A double date with a buddy of mine and his date to a high school dance. She was a bit of a wild child and there was not a second date.

Cheers

We were 16. Dinner at the Red Lobster and a movie after that (can't remember the movie). I don't believe we ever followed up after that.

We were both 16, and shy. I was VERY shy. We went to see The Good, Bad and the Ugly in the theater. He put his arm around me and I was terrified to move. That felt like the longest movie ever, paralyzed in one position. 😂 We dated for a few weeks or months, enough to be comfortable going out. After that, I wasn’t nearly as shy about dating.

I was 17 and a HS senior very studious with zero dating experience. The year was coming to a close and the senior prom loomed in front of me. I asked "her" out (one of my classmates) and surprisingly to me she said yes. I have no recollection whatever of the prom - probably because I had no idea how to dance. Afterwards is seared into my brain. I drove her home sometime after midnight and she asked me in.
We sat in the living room and I guess her parents were sleeping. She put on a record .. Frank Sinatra .. I remember him singing "In the wee small hours of the morning ..." Then we kissed. First time ever. I didn't know what to do. Then my memory goes black. I am guessing it was too embarrassing to remember.
A few days later I asked her to a drive-in movie - Dr. Zhivago. We went and things were going ok until the sad ending. We were both crying and she needed a Kleenex, but I had nothing. I caught H**l for not being prepared.

and that was the end of it.

First "date" was with a boy I met when our parents happened to stay at the same Holiday Inn on the beach in Florida. We were both 13, and met in the ocean. He treated me to a hamburger and a coke. We hit it off and were pen pals for years, until college ended it. I married a handsome young man I met in college, and, as I learned years later, so did he! But his first marriage has lasted, whereas mine didn't (I dodged a bullet).

But I wasn't allowed to go out with a boy by myself until I was 15. That meant waiting, which I did impatiently since I liked boys, till my junior year in high school. He was 16. His parents drove us to New York City (we lived about 30 miles from the city) and dropped us off, then picked us up later after lunch and a show. It was great! But he also had about 4 other girlfriends, so the relationship didn't go far.

junior prom.

been married over 30 years now.

Was 16. Doubled with a friend of mine whose's girlfriend brought her girlfriend. I had finished an evening shift at McDonalds and they picked me up(I hope I didnt smell like fries). Two small town kids. We dated for a couple months. After senior year of hs, ended up dating my friends old girlfriend over summer after they had split. Still connected to her through Facebook though it's been years since we chatted.

Too long ago.

My first date with my spouse was 53 years or so ago. We went to a movie. Only one theatre, one screen. Remember those days?

Sound of Music as I recall. She was a student nurse, I was 21, in first year university

I learned afterward, to my great surprise, that although 19/20, this was the first movie she had ever been to. Her upbringing was very socially conservative in a small town. Movies and just abut everything else were a no no.

Mine was the exact opposite.

Dating out of her church community was frowned upon. marriage even more so.

We moved 2500 miles away from her home town. We have been married for 52 years.

Age 15 as a freshman, went to a party with a girl I had grown up with, 17 and a junior. Talked a lot, made out a bit. We went on a date or two more, including her junior prom.

That was the first of 9 proms I went to in my high school years. That one my freshman year, two my sophomore year, three my junior year (including going to my girlfriend's senior prom and her going to my junior prom), and three my senior year (including going to my girlfriend's junior prom and her going to my senior prom). I was asked to go to a 4th prom my senior year but I was going broke between tuxes, flowers and pre-prom dinners so I said no. I should have bought a tux, it would have been cheaper.

I have 2 prom stories, but I don't want to hijack the first date discussion. I may start a new thread.

SHORT STORY
I went out on the first date with my wife, Gina March 1st 1980.
It was a very cold Saturday night, She was 20 and I was 21 (I am 66 now)
I asked her to marry me on our 2nd date and we married 5 months later in August.
We've been married 45 years this year

LONG STORY
We went to Snuffers, a small burger place on lower Greenville Ave.
in Dallas, TX. I had called her earlier on that very cold day and asked her to wear
something warm because I had just bought a new Jeep CJ5 - you have
to have owned one to know that only your feet are warm in those.

We went to a movie after that - we saw "Being There" with Peter Sellers.
It was an odd movie. We then drove around a little and "parked" at
White Rock lake - just talked mostly - I was absolutely hooked. I could
not stop smiling. She was all I could think about.

I had only met her a few weeks earlier where she used to work as a secretary at a Fortune 500 company in downtown Dallas. I remember the exact spot I was standing when I first saw her. I was blown
away by how beautiful she was... but her inner beauty exceeded her outer
beauty, it really was love at first sight for me. She is hilarious and has a great
sense of humor, as evidenced by putting up with me all this time.

I knew she was taking classes on sign language and I had a
deaf friend I knew teach me how to sign - "Will you marry me". I practiced
all the following week and then popped the question on our 2nd date. It was at a Mexican food place called Desperado's. The look on her face was priceless... a mix of shock and disbelief - she asked "Do you know what you just signed?" I said yes and I meant it. She did not say yes until two weeks later.

We then got married just 5 months later and it has been an AMAZING 45
years. She still takes my breath away and is my best friend in the world.
God has blessed me richly with such an incredible wife, I really, truly, believe
God gave me the Proverbs 31:10-31 woman.

That is a great story dirt!!!

My goodness, where on earth did a 15-year-old get the money to attend so many proms? I only went to two (junior and senior) and even for a girl wearing a homemade dress (my mom was an expert seamstress) it was expensive. I had to pay for my hair-do and other bits and bobs with my housecleaning and lawn-mowing money.

Incidentally, the halter-neck gown my Mother made for my senior prom (at another high school) still fits, and I wore it to my little courthouse wedding this September. Gorgeous Vogue pattern, classy 1970's flower print.

The 70s will never go out of style...

Indeed! The good 70's stuff has come back! I showed the photo to a 50ish lady at my eye doctor's. She asked if she could be my daughter and inherit the dress.

First date was a double date to a drive-in (we had the back seat). Movie was The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Good thing it is shown on TV alot as I don't recall seeing much of it at the drive-in! Fond memories every time I hear the theme song!

I don't remember exactly when it was - late 60s? I don't recall how we met either. She was from the upper-class side of town I was from the lower middle class side. She was gorgeous and I was way out of my league. I picked her up in my Rambler Classic and we headed for a movie on the other side of the river.
Just after exiting the toll booth where I paid 10 cents to cross, the draw bridge went up for a boat to pass. The draw bridge got stuck and we sat there for quite a while - well past the start of the movie. Everyone had to turn around - they even gave me my dime back. She said there was a dollar dance at the beach and suggested we go check out a new band that was becoming popular. I agreed and we drove half an hour to the beach auditorium. I paid the two bucks to get in and we stood and watched/listened to the Allman Brothers Band play for two hours. They were fantastic. After a couple of more dates, we never saw each other again.
