DH was laid off effective 12/1/2019 and decided to retire. He'll start Medicare in September.

Medicare sent him an IRMAA notification based on our 2018 income, but his income stopped when he stopped working, other than a $20K severance payment made by his company in January 2020.

We got the appeal form, but I'm not sure how to fill it out. Since he worked 11/12 months of 2019, our 2019 income wasn't substantially affected. Our 2020 income will be significantly lower -- below the IRMAA threshold for a couple filing a joint return. If I put in the 2019 MAGI, there isn't much decrease from the 2018 MAGI they used to determine the IRMAA.

Suggestions?

I put in my estimated 2020 magi and wrote a note saying I retired 1/6 and attached a YTD 2020 paystub.

Their theory is that if you do end up exceeding the threshold, they will get the $$ anyway. I actually called our local office to discuss. That's where I had to send the form since they stopped doing in-person visits at the local office.
