I'm looking for a form to fill out and mail to IRS for a quarterly tax payment. I should have done them in 1st and 2nd quarters will start now for the third.

So, can someone lead in the right direction and where to find the form to print off and fill out for a payment to IRS>

Thank YOU.

You can also use Direct Pay and just beam them the money and be done with it. No muss, no fuss, no form.

I have paid online using EFTPS since 2011, easy peasy. I pay state estimated taxes online as well since 2011, first IN now NC.

Thanks, and I may do that would like to have that paper trail.

I have also used EFTPS the last 3 years (scheduled quarterly). However, I hesitate to attach the term 'easy' to the website. :)

@street You can also just forget about quarterly tax payments and just do a 100% withholding distribution from your IRA that is at least 110% of your last years’ tax amount. This makes the IRS happy, and you can do it in December. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

We did most of the RMD Tax withholding in Dec last year and had a $4 late fee penalty even though we had about $4K in tax refund.

I stopped using the form over fifteen years ago after the IRS credited one of my checks to a different account. I got it straightened out but I had to provide copies of the front and back the 4 cancelled checks. IRS didn’t ask for copies of the form.

Thanks for all the great help once again. I thought if you do qtr. tax payments and even if under paid you don't get that penalty?
Is that true? I don't want the penalty.

You may avoid the Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty if:
  • Your filed tax return shows you owe less than $1,000 or
  • You paid at least 90% of the tax shown on the return for the taxable year or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever amount is less.

Since I started making quarterly payments about 10 years ago I have been using the IRS form on the website and sending payment by snail mail. I photocopy the check, form, and addressed envelope and mail it at the Post Office. I have always underpaid since RMD increases each year as well as dividends and interest. I have never had a problem but I still save the photocopies along with my tax forms and all supporting paperwork. I also check my CU account to make sure the check was cashed.

Thanks Midpack!!!!

Badger, that sounds great and I want the paper trail/photo trail as well. I feel more comfortable doing it that way. I'm sure online would be better in a lot of ways but I'm old school so... behind times.

Thank You, thank You all!!!

Midpack's explanation covered many/most cases, but I believe there are some other criteria. For example, if AGI is above a certain level, you must have 110% of previous year. In 2023, it was $150000 for married joint & $75000 for single. I haven't seen where that was changed for 2024 forward, but I may have missed it. There are also exceptions for farmers, fishermen etc that have 'lumpy' incomes.

If you use Direct Pay you are provided with a receipt at the time of processing which contains the date, dollar amount and a confirmation number. You can print that out for your paper trail.

True!!! At some point I may get setup to pay direct, but for this year I'm leaning to mail in payment or money order.

+1. Thank you and members for asking/responding to this estimated tax question. This will be my first year to pay estimated taxes.

It will appear on your bank statement as a payment to the IRS

@street - the paper trail from an online direct pay is far, far better than any paper trail from your hardcopy dropped in the mail. What if it gets lost in the mail? With direct pay, you have instant confirmation of payment.

There is nothing to set up. Just go to the website and process your payment. IRS Direct Pay

+1 - it might take a little effort to set up an EFTPS, but direct pay is eezy-peezy

And if you are taking RMDs or any other retirement withdrawal, as others have said, that is the easiest. Just make your estimated annual payment anytime(s) during the year. Timing doesn't matter for withholding from withdrawals like that.

It depends on how much you under pay by and whether you pay all four quarterly payments on time. You're asking about this in July, so does that mean you did not make the payments that were due on April 15 and June 15?

If you have not already paid half the tax you'll owe for 2024, then you probably will owe an underpayment penalty. If most of your income is received in the second half of the year, then you might be able to mitigate the penalty by filling out Form 2210 Schedule AI when you do your return.

Thank You all again for knowledge you offered to me. Okay I'm learning and rethink the process.

Some very good knowledge from experience.

I've been going to DirectPay Direct Pay | Internal Revenue Service for a few years. What I appreciate about it is that I get a line item in checking about the withdrawal, it's paid on the date I want, and there's an email confirmation. I first learned about this on the forum.
