IRS froze my tax refund

We made a large year end charitable contribution that screwed up my planning.
That happened to me one year. We made a large charitable contribution and I didn’t figure out until December that we had already overpaid estimated taxes even without the Q4 estimated tax payment. So at least skipped the final payment. I’m pretty sure we applied the refund to the following year estimated taxes.

For 2024 we applied our refund to 2025 taxes. For 2026 we don’t expect to pay much if anything in taxes, and our withholding from SS and my pension should cover whatever we might owe.

I also received a letter this year. It is nerve wracking as you have no idea what part of the tax return they think needs verification. Our refund was also larger than usual as the qualified dividends/ordinary dividends ratio was different than I had calculated for estimated taxes. We filed in late March and received a letter in Mid-May so just counting the days hoping that we will hear soon.

It took about a month and a half after the IRS letter and me sending verification before my return was deposited in my account. Hang in there. I did not get any verification from the IRS...the deposit just showed up. Just like you...I was upset waiting, too.

Theu very poor planning on my part and a rather large dividend in late December, I owed the Feds a big check, which I wrote. Without that dividend, there would have been a very small refund. However, I overpaid the state. I am expecting a mid 4-digit refund. They sent me a letter requesting all of my 1099's which I did. I am still awaiting them to review the 1099's. I thought they would have that info already. I guess they were too lazy to look it up. Anything to use my money's interest.
