Is your portfolio at a high?

I’m down 1.3% ytd, 2.8% from an ath.

Volatility has never bothered me and at these amounts, it’s trivial. I’m still significantly ahead of where I was a couple of years ago…

I just checked my totals. Over the past two days, I went from being up 0.31% YTD, to down 1.43%. Meh, whatever. I was expecting it to be worse!

January 27 is my ATH. For me to get back to that point, I'd need to see a gain of 3.99%. Times like this are a good reminder to focus on the percentages, and not the raw dollar amounts. Dollar-wise, that represents about 1.5 years of my final salary, which seems kinda major. But ~4%? A hiccup. Slight case of acid reflux at best.

That is a bit low, with FX Deriv. you would have a higher Gain overall.

So here’s my rationalization of the day. Where my portfolio sits now was a high point not that long ago. I was happy at that point, so I am happy now too.
The reality is having lived through some biggie sized market drops, this is nothing. Absolutely nothing.
This.
I was down this week, like most here...including a six figure loss on Tuesday of which I am below even that level. Having said that, I am back to just above the ATH set on 1/23. Like you, I was certainly happy with things on 1/23, so why not now? As they say, enjoy the day as you may not know what the next one brings.

Investments are way down, and with the direction the economy is going, I think I hit my last all time time just recently, especially in "real" dollars, but likely in nominal dollars, as well.
Wait. What? Are you checking out soon? I hope not.

Even at my age, I'm at least guessing I'll get a chance at another high before I check out. No guarantees in this world, but if the markets (and the economy) behave as we have seen for over 100 years, most of us will get another "high" at some time in the future. I could be wrong, of course.

No, not planning that. But I have no pension and will not even be getting SS for years, so I'm living off my savings alone for a while. Plus I have some major home maintenance I've put off (like new roof and more that far exceeds my total spending from last year) that will make it more difficult to hit more record highs. So unless the market recovers soon, I might not have another ATH. But it's fine - I have planned for those upcoming expenses.

Sorry to hear that. My gut tells me you'll STILL make it up over the next few years. Heh, heh, I guess we'll see. Hang in there.

Wow, if you guys keep up with all the gloom and doom I might even check my balance sometime this month.

This is why the title of the thread is “Is your portfolio at a high?”
Not what % you are from your previous peak, and not when your last high occurred. The question is simply whether your portfolio is currently at a high RIGHT NOW. ;)

I salute you for maintaining such excellent thread discipline after 48 pages and 1186 posts.

Stormy markets. Boat still floats. Sitting about 2.4% below my high depending how muni bonds get marked to market over night.
I read a lot of fear on various forums. VIX is only at 27. Sitting on my cash stash until we go over 30. Hopefully well over.

Yes, the all-time highs have stopped for me for a while it seems. We are down a few percentage points from our ATH. Trying not to look daily, but recognizing this is normal volatility, if exacerbated by the current conflict.

Well, it's looking like today we're up a car so far, which is fun, but dropping the same car on Friday was more exciting. Between a big charitable contribution and moving some money out of the market and into a couple bank specials, rental and contracts it's all pretty vague - we may be down 7.4% in stocks & such but the NW is only down 1.9%. WooHoo - with luck our next big hit to absorb will be middle of this month!
