I've got Covid.... The thread for your covid experiences

My husband and I both just came down with COVID for the first time - hubby Saturday morning, me Sunday morning.

What is so absolutely heartbreaking is we were supposed to meet up with my brother for a sailing tour of Acadia National Park on Saturday. The timing couldn't be worse.

So, we had to find a hotel last minute and are holed up for several days until we feel better. Unfortunately, we don't feel up to even meeting my brother and his wife for outdoor activities in the park with them. We both got on Paxlovid right away but still feel pretty terrible, certainly not up to any extensive walking around. I have spiked a fever of 102 the last 2 nights. We are both feeling exhausted and have headaches.

We've been planning this for months, and it also was partly a 70th birthday celebration for him. It's just so sad.
I am so sorry you got sick at such a bad time, I hope you feel better soon.

DH and I both caught it for the first time in April. DH was prescribed Paxlovid and had to stop taking 2 of his heart meds, Diltiazem and Xarelto. I caught it 2 days later and my doc prescribed Lagevrio which does not interact with any meds and I was able to continue with my hypertension meds. The efficacy is not supposed to be as quite as good as Paxlovid but my doc likes it. It worked great. I still have the bottle and next time I get Covid, I'll demand they prescribe this stuff :). DH also had metal mouth and I didn't!!! Downside is that DH's Paxlovid was 100% covered by Medicare, whereas mine cost me $600+.
I also had the metal mouth. I found covid to be good for weight loss as I lots over 10 lbs in a week. I had to quit my diltiazem and a statin. Doc said not to take Dlitiazem for 3 days after Paxlovid or it could cause low blood pressure. I guess he forgot to mention that I may have low blood pressure when first starting the Paxlovid as it was in my system already. I dropped from 150/80 to 102/62 over night then slowly started back up.

Returned from Vancouver Island on August 14th. DH got it first. High temp, 103, soaking sheets, no energy. Then I got it, worse. Ended up in ED with Covid, Norovirus, and an infection heading towards full on sepsis. I won't go into the gritty details. I had Covid with no symptoms a couple of years ago. Fully vaxed. This virus is nasty but I pulled through, no Paxlovid. I don't need a vaccination until Nov. My heart goes out to those who suffered with the original Covid. Cannot imagine. I've talked to several friends who knew of healthy, active people passing away. This virus is different for everyone.

wow...sobering that you're fully vaxed and still ended up in ED with so many complications. So sorry for what you both experienced. :(

I had a fairly bad case with very high fever and nasty symptoms, but nothing that required hospitalization. Yikes.

I just got over my 3rd or 4th case. I think I had it in February 2020 before there was testing. This one was probably the worst for two reasons. The current strain has diarrhea as a symptom, and I had low-level symptoms for almost two weeks. The core symptoms - mostly fever/chills - lasted the usual couple of days, but a low-level fever (right around 100F) continued for over a week even though tests were negative.

It finally caught up with me. I came home from Europe Thursday night- hadn't slept well my last night in London and then woke up at 4 the next 2 mornings and couldn't get back to sleep, so when I felt bad I chalked it up to jet lag. Last night I developed a scratchy throat so I pulled out the COVID tests. Positive- four years into the pandemic and just got a booster a month ago. The good news is that I've slept a lot and the symptoms don't seem to be worsening. Guess I better cancel my cardiologist appointment tomorrow AM.

My Apple Watch is nagging me to get up and move. I'm ignoring it.

Call the cardiologist and reschedule. Covid can be very hard on the heart. Get the exam and testing when it is completely cleared, 30 to 60 days. Any symptoms, contact them immediately.

Try to get on Paxlovid if you can.

FINALLY tested negative after 14 days. Hubby and I still feel easily fatigued. Going to take it easy and rest as much as we feel we need to. Man I hope we never get this again.

Totally agreed on that- I’m also cancelling a platelet donation appointment. I still can’t believe it but the darn test kit with the two lines is staring at me from my bedside table.

I just called the cardiologist and left a message. I also realized he’s in the best position to decide whether or not I need Paxlovid so I asked that he get back to me on that, too. Symptoms are stable, maybe improving a little. Fingers crossed.

You only outlasted me by a little bit. Got it for the first time in August. Mild, no problems. Hopefully yours will be the same.

Unless one hibernates from the world, seems like few will be lucky enough to escape catching covid and many may even catch it annually if attending concerts or events, at airports/on cruises or passing through other high traffic spots; joining large family dinners/holidays; spending time with school-aged grandkids - vaccine or no vaccine. Hopefully the shot lessens impact and reduces odds of long covid.

I've gotten Covid 2 times (and the vaccine 3 times) and each time, the Urgent Care and our Primary Care would not prescribe Paxlovid.

How does one get a script for Paxlovid? Are there "key words" to say to be allowed such an option? Obviously, it's not permitted for me. LOL.....I'd love to have that when we travel.

I think I got Paxlovid because I was almost 65 when I got Covid for the first time. I did not have to ask for it, the PA suggested I take it.

Got my 2nd case after a trip to Napa country back in August, Experienced sore throat and cold symptoms, then muscular aches for two days. Went to Doctor who said that currently we treat this as a severe cold. I was given a prescription for a nasal spray and a once a day cough pill. Tested negative after 10 days, never vaccinated.

I figure that my cardiologist will have enough clout that if he thinks I need it, I’ll get it. I’m 71 and have mitral valve prolapse and he’ll know if I’m at high risk because of that.

I agree that COVID is out there and can happen anywhere in large groups. I was in London for two overnights last week (Tuesday and Wednesday) and used the Underground a lot so that would be my guess. I’ve traveled more than the average person since COVID so I guess I was lucky up to now.

I was 71 in June 2023 when I contracted COVID and I had no trouble getting Paxlovid prescribed at the ER (only thing open in our town on a Sunday evening). DH was also able to get it after he turned positive and he was only 55. Maybe the guidelines have changed but you do have to be careful depending on the drugs you may already be taking.

I haven't heard back from the cardiologist but I'm happy to say the symptoms are abating already. After sleeping most of yesterday and all of last night, I've been awake for the last 6 hours although I've rested a few times. My appetite is back. Congestion is still bothersome. Unless he feels otherwise I don't see any need to medicate at this point.

Hubby and I, ages 56 and 60, were prescribed Pax based upon our age. We do not have other high risk factors, as far as I am aware. We both had to stop our statins temporarily. In addition, we both had to demonstrate recent bloodwork showing normal liver function.

You also have to be within 5 days of symptoms starting.

The ED visit was due to Covid symptoms masking an infection. I did not know I had an infection because I was sleeping a lot, and not drinking enough water. Plus I had the Norovirus, which isn't a big deal by itself. The infection from a UTI did not register until sepsis began setting in. So, Covid by itself is not life threatening anymore. Very few people end up in the ED from Covid these days.

Trip winding down and we avoided it so far, unlike last year's trip which included a raging Covid case.

Now will we come home from Europe with Covid like so many have reported here?

Three days ago we were at a restaurant with German coughing lady at a table next to us. At least it was semi outdoors as is common in Greece. We hiked to a town 15km down the road, yet last night, the same German coughing lady ends up at the table next to us. What's the chance? Crazy.

We were literally, I mean literally, the only ones on the cross continental air flight who wore a mask. That's all I can say because the subject ist verboten hier.

So age 60 and no Pax for me.....

I think the lesson learned is to say "the symptoms just started"....the "5 days of symptoms starting" requirement to get Pax probably got me as I think each time I've had covid, I probably said "symptoms started a week a go".

Live and learn.

We flew home from Athens, Greece in April and were not feeling good.....We arrived in the USA sick...yes to Covid......I'm sure we did our part to spread Covid on the Delta flight home.

My case is alleviating rapidly, thank heaven. I finally called the cardiologist's office to re-schedule but at this point I see no need for medication. Sometimes communication in that office is undependable and if I'd been feeing worse yesterday I certainly would have called.

I did have a troubling thought about upcoming plans. I'm guessing DS and DDIL were vaccinated "one and done" and the kids (10, 7 and 5) have not been vaccinated at all. I do know that the adults were vaccinated a couple of years ago and mild cases of COVID have hit the family twice. Now I'm reading disturbing things in an AARP article about how people can have a couple of mild cases and suddenly the 3rd will result in long COVID, bizarre allergies or severe symptoms. I'm scheduled to drive there 10/1 (so, 11 days after symptoms started) and then we're flying to Chicago 10/2 for a couple of nights. I have till 9/30 to cancel the hotel without penalty (2 rooms for 2 nights so $$$). I do NOT want to be responsible for bringing a case of COVID into the household.

I'm going to test on 9/30 and pray that I'm negative. I don't want to be the bad guy and cancel but it was their decision to go minimal on vaccinations- a decision with which I disagreed. I'm going to send the a note right now and ask about vaccination status. Maybe my assumptions are wrong.
