Last movie you saw and what you thought...

I agree about Jeremy Strong’s performance. I thought he should have received more awards recognition. I had the same positive impression of his performance as when I saw Robert Downey Jr’s performance in Oppenheimer.
I agree! Also an interesting insight into the formation of Trumps later day personality!

"Star Trek: Section 31" on Paramount Plus.

Oh boy. This is not a Star Trek story. There is nothing Star Trek related that is recognizable in this turd, except maybe the CGI graphics and sound effects of the transporter. All of the characters were unknown to me and the script did nothing to make me give a rip about any of them. This could be a generic science fiction made for TV movie with above average special effects.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh "stars" in it. She sleepwalks through her role in between the numerous fight scenes she's involved in. There are a lot of lengthy fight scenes. Just about every cliche in sci-fi is in here and the dialogue is so wooden it insults trees.

As a Star Trek fan I felt obligated to watch it. I'm here to tell other Star Trek fans that you do not need to watch this. Please do not watch this. I give it a 4 out of 10, mostly for the excellent surround sound.

65
On Hulu. A 2023 sci-fi thriller about a pilot from a different planet who crash lands on planet Earth . . . 65 million years ago. I had not seen Adam Driver in many other roles besides Kylo Ren from Star Wars, but I think he’s a pretty talented actor here. Although critics gave this one poor reviews, I like the sci-fi genre so I was moderately entertained.
I watched this on a plane trip back from Greece. It helped pass the time.

Continuing our Oscar nominated film run:

Watched The Substance -- WTF?:confused:
That movie was boring, imo. Rinse and repeat. Hollywood chews up and spits out girls. People will eventually look at old starlets as monsters. Yeah, we get it. Hopefully Demi wins. Hollywood has snubbed her forever.

Flow - Latvian entry for Best Animation and Best Foreign Film. Beautiful lyrical tale of survival and cooperation with animals in some kind of non-human (perhaps post apocayptic) world. No dialog. Even more impressive in that the animation was all done with open-source software.

The Wild Robot -- Best Animated Film nominee. Well done, a little predicatable, and sugary but enterataining for the kiddies.

A Complete Unknown -- Absoultely brilliant performance by Chalamet (and I am NOT a Chamalet fan) as Bob Dylan and excellent performances by Ed Norton and Monica Barbaro. Captured well the times and the events. Very Entertaining to a child of the 60s.

Thanks for the heads up - almost watched it last night. :)

Wolfs streaming on Apple TV was entertaining. Brad Pitt and George Clooney as competing "fixers" on a job that goes wrong in every way.

OTOH, Fly Me to the Moon (also Apple TV) with Scarlett Johanssen and a mis-cast Channing Tatum was awful. At no point did I believe that Tatum worked or could work for NASA. The whole film felt silly, and I felt dumber after having watched it. I love a good space program documentary or film -- this movie made me want to go back and watch a good show about the moon landings, like the From the Earth to the Moon series.

Yes, "Fly Me to the Moon' was not a good watch. Besides Channing Tatum's character being miscast the movie couldn't decide if it was a comedy, a rom-com, or a serious movie. There was less than zero chemistry between Tatum and Scarlett Johansson's character and at no point did I believe that Johansson's character would have been granted carte blanche access to NASA's inner workings.

I recently saw "First Man" and it was an intense look at the moon landing from Neil Armstrong's perspective. I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

Becoming Led Zeppelin documentary in IMAX! If you grew up listening to their music, you will enjoy the ride.

The time frame is rather limited, from childhood through Led Zeppelin II. But there are lots of interesting pieces of info. For instance, Jimmy Page was a busy studio musician prior to becoming a rock star. Did you know he and John Paul Jones played on the James Bond theme song for Goldfinger?

Just saw it last night, very good and tremendous insight into the bands beginning!!

“A Complete Unknown”, the film about early Bob Dylan. Enjoyable, even if there was some poetic license involved.

Further Oscar Run -- my opinions only:

Dune: Part 2 -- being a big fan of the 1984 David Lynch version this was hard to watch (as was Part I), Too long too boring too monochromatic and if you did not read the book you'll feel like an outsider looking in wonder what is going on. Not Chalamet's best outing.

Nickel Boys --reminicent of 2011's "Tree of Life" - a story of survival of a young Black man unjustly sent to an abusive reform school and how he survives. Heartbreaking but very touching.

Wicked -- tedious and over done. Songs terrible. I guess I just didn't get it. Ariana Grande's performance is the sole redeeming factor in this otherwise overwrought disjointed mess.

Sing Sing -- outstanding film about a theatre program inside Sing Sing prison with a Oscar worthy performance by Coleman Domingo and staring some of the actual "graduates" of the program playing themselves. Do not miss it.

Wolfs was a solid B movie for us with car chases.

Becoming Led Zeppelin documentary in IMAX!
For some reason I was on the fence about this, but decided to go. Not in IMAX, though--a regular screen, because of scheduling.

I thought it was a whole lot of fun. Man, that year they had after playing in San Francisco is almost unbelievable. Kind of like the Beatles--it's easy to forget how fast everything happened.

I had no idea Jimmy Page was so adamant about not having singles--that was a pretty ballsy move for a kid his age. And I adored the footage from that concert at the Roundhouse, I think it was--those people on the side with French horns (?) sitting in their laps listening politely, and kids and others with their fingers in their ears.

I never paid much attention to John Paul Jones because (1) Robert Plant and (2) I never did like his haircut. But he has certainly aged very gracefully.

the first batman. saw for free with part owner of theater. awful. the violations of physics make me physically queasy.

Flow
Now streaming on Hulu. An animated film with no dialogue about a sweet cat in the wild. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature film. Cat lovers would enjoy it.

"The Gorge" on Apple TV. A military/sci-fi/horror/romcom movie (it defies description.)

It reminded me of those B-movies we'd watch at the drive-ins as teenagers, except it's got excellent production values and is very well acted. It's in 4K Dolbyvison and the soundtrack is fantastic on a home theater system (turn it up!)

The eastern and western powers have set up a couple of guard towers on opposite sides of a deep, impenetrable gorge manned by two highly trained guards who watch over the gorge. They are not preventing someone from getting into the gorge as much as they are protecting the world from whatever comes out of the gorge.

Starts kind of slow but once the shooting starts it's a wild ride full of action!

I'm giving it an 8 out of 10. If military/sci-fi/horror is not your thing then maybe it's a 7.

We saw "My Dead Friend Zoe" last night. It opens on February 28 (we attended a preview). It is a fantastic movie that deals with veteran PTSD. The filmmaker is a veteran and the film is largely autobiographical. I've never served but thought it handled things very well. It's definitely worth seeing. And when you get home, make a donation to the Bob Woodruff foundation. We did.

Captain America: Brave New World
Seen in theater. I was not expecting a lot, as the critics have been in the middle, and ticket sales have been somewhat slow. But I thought the story was decent, and Harrison Ford did pretty well in a supporting role; he’s still got it. The action scenes were ludicrous but fun, with nicely choreographed martial arts moves. I found the movie moderately entertaining.

Zero Day on Netflix series. Carries a message about the unknown cyber enemy attacking the US. DeNero plays the role well.

We have the final episode left - likely watch it tonight. Good enough to ge me to watch the 1st 5 episodes

I watched "Conclave" at our public library last week. I thought it was well done and confirmed my impression of Ralph Fiennes as a very good actor.
