Last movie you saw and what you thought...

Finishing up our annual Oscar nomination binge watch. Can recommend Marty Supreme and Frankenstein as the two best in the Best Picture category (one mans opinon). The rest range from interesting to meh to totally confusing.
This is the big TCM Academy Awards month in honor of the awards soon to be presented. There are hundreds of previous winners (from all categories). Occasionally, there are some true gems presented. Others are just "old movies" to me. Sorta like today's movies. I've found few movies I'd even want to watch today - let alone actually watching them. Lots of old ones are also "ho-hum" to me.

What I really like about this month on TCM is that many of the movies are preceded by the hosts giving back stories on the movies. I'm fascinated by that aspect of TCM - even if I don't end up enjoying the actual movie. Well worth a watch if you have TCM and the time.

I saw Iron Lung... OMG... it was horrible... probably one of the worst I have seen in 5 years... I read the spiel for it and thought "sci-fi"... sure... but if I had not read it I would not have figured out what was happening from what I saw... at the beginning they said it was based on a book or game... that has to be a big bust also..

Do not waste your time if you had even had an inkling of watching...

Focused on watching some "Top Rated Movies" this week.
Watched Shawshank Redemption, Inception, and Interstellar all for the first time.

Loved Shawshank Redemption.

This week, I will try to watch Goodfellas and The Godfather series. Maybe Pulp Fiction too.

I went to the theater to see Send Help. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't the best use of two hours I could have found.

Song Sung Blue on Peacock. Good, but glad I didn’t pay full fare to see it at a movieplex.

Just finished the movie Bugonia on Peacock...4 Oscar nominations. Movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and main characters were Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. It is classified as a black comedy thriller film.
After watching about half the film my wife and I said to each other "This is the strangest film we have seen since 'Poor Things'". Another by Yorgos, starring Emma Stone.

But we kept watching, and I have to admit that although it was dramatic and almost a horror film it did have much deeper meaning and I'm glad we finished it. I think Emma Stone does have a chance for Best Actress. In hindsight, it has several messages that relate to the contemporary world of today...which I find stranger every day.

We stopped watching half way through. We could see the virtue signaling and it just was hard to watch.

DW and I also watched Song Sung Blue. It was a good movie and I would recommend watching it.
I liked it, although I was not a huge Neil Diamond fan back in the day. I do think it is plus to make song that people can sing along with and Diamond has a lot of them.
I wonder about the Oscars....I thought it was weird that Kate Hudson was nominated and Hugh Jackman was not - not the first time he has been snubbed?

Yeah, I swore off awards shows years ago.

The 2026 Oscar nominated short film "Retirement Plan" (on YouTube) ... 7 minutes, 20 seconds well spent.

The Singers on Netflix. 18 minutes of film that is as close to some reality as any I've seen. Smoking. Swearing. Desperate men. A very very well spent 18 eighteen minutes that pulled me in.
Really enjoyed that short film. There’s so much unrecognized talent. The down on your luck feel made me think never judge a book by it’s cover.

Predator badlands was pretty good. Maybe because I had low expectations for it. The last Predator movie I couldnt even finish. This one I put on and was entertained. So it exceeded my expectations and I will say it was one of the better movies I saw in the last year.

Elio (Oscar nominated animated film) -- better than I expected. Nice story about family, bravery, and understanding that being "different" is ok. I enjoyed it.

Had to watch "Paul McCartney...Man on the Run" on Prime ASAP....So good. A must-see for anyone that is a Beatle fan. It brought up so many memories - a love story.

Do you know of any other venues for this movie? Sounds like something I'd actually pay for at a theater if it were ever offered. Thanks for the alert.

"Operation Fortune" on Amazon Prime Video. Stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Hugh Grant. Directed by Guy Ritchie.

Another one of these so-called Action-Comedy movies where all the characters are absolute experts on what they do, never make mistakes, and can't be bothered to break a sweat. The kind of movie where the guy that fights (Statham) is invincible, the tech expert (Plaza) can hack anything undetected, the sniper is unfailingly deadly accurate. The kind of movie where the characters think they are wisecracking pithy quips but they're really spouting off dialogue no one would ever remotely utter.

Unfortunately, the action scenes were mostly flaccid and there was scant comedy to be found.

Statham does this sort of action movie in his sleep, and in fact he did appear to be sleeping throughout. I can't remember a scintilla of emotional display. Plaza thinks she's too darn cute for her own good and comes off as condescending.

The only bright spot, and it was the only reason to watch the movie, was the way that Hugh Grant hammed up his role as the villain trying to facilitate the transfer of the MacGuffin. It was fun to watch him enjoy himself playing out of his usual character. You could tell he was having a blast.

I give this movie a 5 out of 10, 2 of those 5 points are because of Hugh Grant's role.

Went and saw "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die"

Best described as an absurdist, time travel sci-fi comedy.
Sam Rockwell was amazing, as always.
Overall a little contrived but laugh out loud funny in parts.
There was a twist ending.

Definitely worth a watch for anyone into that genre. 3 out of 4 thumbs.

Maybe it's just me, but that preview doesn't appeal to me. YMMV

I blew it. I knew it was limited release for 2 days only and I forgot and missed them both. Might have to subscribe for a month to watch it at home now.
If you are an Elvis fan this is out playing and has great reviews. Basically lost early 70s concert and such film found in a salt storage mine that was brought back to life kind of like that Beatles one from a few years ago.

We watched it on Amazon Prime last night. I think it's still up there -- AmazonMGMstudios website says the release date was just yesterday 2/27.

Crime 101...

Got good reviews and I will agree... not one that will win awards but a good movie IMO..
