Last movie you saw and what you thought...

IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, on Hulu. “ Three story lines, spanning thousands of years, intersect and reflect on hope, connection, and the circle of life.”

Very thought provoking. Very entertaining and had my full attention for the hour and a half. Will probably watch it again.

Man on the Run - the McCartney documentary. I enjoyed it and learned a lot about his life post-Beatles. Got a kick out the Jagger quote: “Nothing lasts forever.” :)

Also watch The Housemaid a few days ago. It was ok, but too much deviation from the book for my taste. I really enjoyed the book. My wife didn’t read it and enjoyed the movie.

The Secret Agent. New film, won stuff at Cannes or whatever. 98 Rotten Tomato's.

Neither of us liked it, and my wife can find a reason to like any movie.

Didn't really get where it needed to get, or why. Never really understood the plot or the characters.

I'd go broke paying for all the various streaming services that span the lists of movies on this thread. I understand that once signed up, the movies are 'free', but how about a one-time fee for each movie if I don't want to commit to a service? Like maybe $5 to see a single Hulu, Disney +, Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO, HBO Max, YouTube, Peacock, Peacock Plus, and on and on and on....

The local theater now charges over $25 per seat for an IMAX showing and you have to have an app on your phone to even purchase a ticket there. Oh, and PLUS a fee for that privilege. $52 to see a new release movie with my wife? Really?

"I Like Me" the documentary about John Candy on my flight back from Europe. I always knew he was a really nice guy. I just had no idea how nice a guy he was.

I don't think you can really discuss IMAX and streaming in the same conversation. Or, you can...obviously. But any movie in IMAX is a completely different animal from a movie streamed to someone's house, no matter how fancy the setup.

But what theater requires you to use a phone app to buy a ticket? There's literally no way to do it on a website, or in person?

I suppose a website, but then how are you going to show you bought a ticket? Maybe they send an email with the QR code, I don't know. I just know that they don't sell tickets at the venue any longer. Walk in, show your phone, they scan and point you in the right direction. Lately they don't even do that. Walk in, go to the concession stand, show your phone and they point in you in the right direction after asking if you want popcorn or a soft drink.
IMAX and streaming, with the commonality and in context of reviewing movies, which is what this thread is about. (And what I got off track with my rant)
My point though, was the cost; streaming vs. the 'big screen'. The pricing is not balanced between them.
Personally, I do not think IMAX is that much better than my large OLED screen at home. It is better, just not that much better to be worth getting off my arse and driving 20 miles into town to pay over $50 for a couple hours of movie. Rarely has there even been another person in the theater and never more than 10 to 12 others besides us. I don't know how they can stay in business. Reminds me of the big malls that are now ghost towns in this part of the country.

I see about 70 movies in theaters a year, all over the country, and I have never bought a ticket in advance--always in person when I get there. These days, it's usually at the concession stand for weekday matinees, and there's often a kiosk in the lobby where I buy my ticket (and I think at the kiosk there's an option to pick up tickets). At the kiosk and the concession stand, I get a printed ticket.

Generally the only time I go to IMAX is because the movie is only at a science museum. I've never gone to a "regular new release" movie in IMAX. But I regret not paying closer attention because I saw Baz Luhrmann's EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert the other day, and it was fantastic.

I found out it played for a week in IMAX theaters before moving to regular theaters, and it wasn't on my radar yet during its IMAX run. I think I may have missed a good opportunity.

When they re-released Stop Making Sense, my boyfriend insisted on an IMAX theater--he's picky about sound. I wouldn't have made the effort if he hadn't been going--it was 40 miles each way. But he wanted IMAX, so we made a day of it, and I have to say, it was amazing.

A few weeks later I saw it again in a regular theater, and the second viewing was a great experience, but I could compare and see how IMAX made it better.

Went and saw "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die"
...
Definitely worth a watch for anyone into that genre. 3 out of 4 thumbs.

And maybe for others, too. I avoid science fiction, and time travel movies always confuse me. But I went to this one because I like Sam Rockwell and especially Haley Lu Richardson, and it was playing in only a few theaters around and scarcity makes something special, plus I like to support them when they show something other than the current blockbuster.

I avoided reading anything about it beforehand because I knew it was going to mention science fiction and time travel and I didn't want to be dissuaded. :) So I just went, and I loved it. Yep, I laughed out loud several times,

"I Like Me" the documentary about John Candy on my flight back from Europe. I always knew he was a really nice guy. I just had no idea how nice a guy he was.

A friend recommended it when it so happened I had one day remaining on my Amazon Prime trial. I considered it a sign.

In the documentary, they showed the final scene from Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I'd spent 1-1/2 hours learning what a nice guy John Candy was, and then someone was being nice to his character. I was a goner.

I'd never seen the movie, so I squeezed it in before the deadline, and couldn't believe it: they edited out the curse words. Didn't bleep them, just took them out. On a streaming service you have to pay for!

Same here, I didnt know EPiC Elvis was in IMAX last week and blew it. I saw it today on regular big screen today. Well worth it, too. Very nostalgic and his voice and band were incredible at the theatre. The concert performances and rehearsals focused mostly in the 1970-72 period.

I watched this movie last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! I may watch it again also.
After I watched it I read the reviews and it had 20% rotten tomatoes. I wonder if it’s more relatable to the “mature” audience.

Watched "Hamnet" on Peacock because I saw it was nominated in Best Picture category this year.
It is a fictionalized version of the Shakespeare's Hamlet that is very well done and emotional. Excellent acting and a very easy storyline to follow as compared to Hamlet, which for anyone that took English Lit knows is amazingly complex.

I do think it borders on "literary blasphemy" in the sense that it's simplistic storyline is really fiction and is what I would call a "CliffNotes" of the story.

Having said that - I did enjoy it, and it was well written and Jessie Buckley was outstanding. ☮

Highly recommend “Queen of Chess”, a documentary on Netflix. It’s the fascinating story of the Polcar sisters and a look inside high end world of chess.

Watched "Melania" on Prime...or watched a little of it, not for me. But it was a very lovely story, and she told it with such enthusiasm.

I just watched it on Peacock as well and thoroughly enjoyed it. Heartbreaking at times, the acting is top notch! I haven’t seen most of the Oscar’s Nominees but Jessie Buckley should make a strong bid for best actress for this role!
There is a very good “Making of Hamnet” short on Peacock which I watched immediately following as well. It was fascinating and enlightening about all of the details that go into making an Oscar level movie!

Good luck, have fun, don't die. I didn't love it. Found myself skipping through it. It was out there.

Noticed that the Oscar winning, "One Battle after Another" was on HBO Max. DW and I settled in last night to watch it. My plans were dashed as she grabbed the remote and turned it off after about ten minutes. I thought it was pretty funny but it was too bizarre and political for DW.

I watched this one. Thought it was good, not great. Also watched Burgonia which was up for best picture. I actually liked it better but it was "out there".

“Out there” is a good description. It was hard to watch at times but an intriguing story. I didn’t see the Oscar winning best film.

Just finished the movie Bugonia on Peacock...4 Oscar nominations. Movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and main characters were Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. It is classified as a black comedy thriller film.
After watching about half the film my wife and I said to each other "This is the strangest film we have seen since 'Poor Things'". Another by Yorgos, starring Emma Stone.

But we kept watching, and I have to admit that although it was dramatic and almost a horror film it did have much deeper meaning and I'm glad we finished it. I think Emma Stone does have a chance for Best Actress. In hindsight, it has several messages that relate to the contemporary world of today...which I find stranger every day.
Good summary and impressions of the movie. I am taking a college Film Story Analysis class now and had a discussion with my professor about it after I watched it. It had many of the aspects of film story we are learning about in class but he agreed it is hard to determine who the “hero” figure is of the movie. I’m glad I watched it but not surprised it didn’t win any of the Oscar awards.

Hail Mary, yesterday. My wife read the book out loud and I wasn't a fan of the writing style, but I figured that wouldn't be present in the movie (and it wasn't). I thought IMAX was supposed to be something special. It was just loud. Next time: ear plugs. Thankfully it was mostly the ads at the beginning that was non-stop high volume full spectrum audio. But in the movie I kept noticing the music. Also noticed some rather long scenes. Like the book, a great premise, but the execution was middling.

I just watched F1 with Brad Pitt on Apple TV (I’m trying to watch as many of the Oscar nominated/ winning films as I can for free on my streaming services). It is a high octane (pardon the pun) movie with great filming and technical effects but certainly not in the same category of great films that dominate the Oscar winning best pictures.

Just watched a thought provoking movie on Apple TV+ called Eternity. It is a “romance” genre but it is actually more of a fantasy/ science fiction (?) dealing with the afterlife. It is hilarious at times and touching at others. I found it to be entertaining and an interesting take on how we deal with death of loved ones. I’d be curious if anyone else watched it and what you thought.

For all the Steely Dan fans....if you haven't seen the Steely Dan AJA documentary on Prime it is excellent. They were always such a "tight" band and IMO the perfect fusion of jazz/rock - I have fond memories in '77 when the album came out and sitting around with friends to listen. They (Fagan/Becker) were perfectionists.
