Let's talk Self Driving Cars again!

No difference in my mind, both “tragic, inexcusable, unforgivable” and “criminal” in at least 21 states. Fortunately it’s very uncommon as noted above, an average of 37 deaths per year, 29 in 2023.
The difference I see in culpability is that in one case there is a tragic lapse in memory but no intentionality. In the second case, there is an intentional act with totally selfish motives and lack of empathy toward the vulnerable.

The result is the same, but I think there should be a difference in the penalty. I'm willing to agree to disagree on this one as it is so tragic - and preventable.

The 37 deaths apparently must be that low because you occasionally hear of people intervening, going so far as to break a car window to save a child. Or, more to the point, not all such foul ups lead to death or even serious injury. There is such a thing as "luck" involved in the outcome, I suppose.

Well I am installing FSD version 12.5.4 as I type this.

I had to wait forever because, unlike Midpack, I only have HW3 in my Tesla Model Y.

This version has Actually Smart Summon so my car can come to me in the parking lot. It also has the end to end neural network highway driving stack.

I hope it will be nice. 12.5 has been rolling out slowly and some have reported some issues.

12.3.6 has been driving me almost all the time with no major issues.

I'd love to commute to megacorp with FSD. Having podcasts on the commute has already been a gamechanger. It will be many years until I have FSD if ever in my 2016 Toyota.

Some of us actually enjoy driving, me being one of them. I drive a lot. I put 13,000 miles on my car since February of this year and plan on another 10,000 before years end. I take long trips to visit family and run up 4,000+ miles on those adventures!

I guess when I get so old that I can't drive safely, then a FSD car would appeal to me. Or maybe just take Uber or similar.

I see people posting unusual situtations like construction areas where self driving makes mistakes. What happened to personal responsibility? If it's a unique situation, drive yourself!

It’s straightforward. You can takeover immediately and I do if I think the car is not doing as well as I like. However, the current version of FSD does extremely well in construction zones. If road markings poor I might take over, or if visibility is poor due to bad weather.

When the car is driving I still feel like I’m driving! Because I’m carefully supervising the car. I’m just not having to do much else most of the time, no manipulation of the controls and that is so cool! Just paying attention and looking. The car takes care of all the niggly details.

I used to drive longer routes to avoid stop lights. Now, because the car handles them and the surrounding traffic so well, I just have the car drive the suggested shortest route.

You know those little hash lines they paint to help you keep your lane when 2 or 3 lanes are turning left? Well last year our DOT accidentally made the 3 invisibly merge to become 2. It was chaotic. I went through twice, and noticed people got through it, usually with gestures and intentional give-ways, maybe even a few middle fingers. I'm confident a SDC would not collide, but I just wonder how it would get through resolving this problem which should not have happened. Just curious. One of the many exceptions out there: dumb line painting.

This only lasted about a day and a half. They quickly resolved and repainted.

Do you have any personal experience or examples? It’s true FSD can’t handle some construction zones or other unusual situations, but IME FSD handled construction zones surprisingly well most of the time, flawlessly in some cases. And in my experience FSD hesitates when it’s not sure what to do, it never did anything reckless or unsafe IME - 4 months with late V11 and early V12, I’m sure it’s even better now.

The car tried to turn into a street that was had just put up bolsters for in street dining. My point was something unusual like that is easily handled by the driver and I wouldn't expect any car to be so perfect as to blame self driving. I'm pro FSD.

I spent much of my career in high tech and one thing I learned is that the guys with arrows in their chests are the ones who were out front.

I love the FSD early adopters aka test pilots. I'll be watching for a few years to see how they do, as if someday I can't drive any more I will be looking more closely -- probably at robo-Über.

Based on limited experience I think I liked 12.3.6 better than 12.5.4. The new version seems to slow down too aggressively, sort of like slamming on the brakes. It also seemed to follow closer than I like.

I changed the FSD setting from normal to chill but have not had a chance to try it out.

The summon feature is cool, but like self park, I don't trust it enough to use it close to other cars.

The new version also seems to be more cautious. Maybe too much so.
