Living Under a Rock....Uncrustables

It’s funny because I wouldn’t touch Smucker’s PB or grape jelly with a 10 foot pole. Not to mention the bread!
Yeah, that's my feeling. I'm a bread AND a jelly snob. The bread I buy is a brand called Food for Life- brown, flavorful, loaded with seeds and sprouts, and it costs about $8 a loaf. Not good if you have to send 5 kids to school with lunches but it's just me here. My favorite jelly is Bonne Maman although I never buy it because I try to watch carbs. And NO high-fructose corn syrup!

I did read that some school lunch programs include Uncrustables. Big Food wins again.

I notice that Smucker’s does have a high quality “just peanuts and salt” PB, but that’s not what is in those Uncrustables!

Yeah, that's the first thing I noticed, too. Grape jelly?!? That's the one which is always left in the bowl at the breakfast place, after customers have removed all the good flavors.

But, in all fairness, I did a quick search and found that they do make other flavors. I've never given them a second look at the supermarket, so I wouldn't know if those other flavors are usually in stock, or just the "plain" ones.

If I'm going to BTD on snack foods, this one is pretty far down on the list. Now, Little Debbie zebra cakes, that's a whole 'nother category!

I had to Google it to see what they are. Never heard of them or seen them at the grocery store. Most surprising, I don't remember ever seeing them advertised on TV.

They are a reminder of a staple from my childhood-=PB&J on white wonderbread--one of my favs back then.

I just make my own peanut butter half sandwiches (i.e. one slice of bread cut in two). I don't bother with the jelly.

Yes. They’ve been around since 1995. Imagine an ordinary PB&J sandwich, with the center cut out with a round cookie cutter, and edges somewhat sealed/crimped. I bought a box at Costco after seeing the golf video above, they were OK, never bought another. Just another product no one needs, but millions will buy.
Ah, I see. Health food.

But I never have had a clue what people like. I would not have been a good entrepreneur.

Yes, except ours are square. Used when camping to make "pizza" sandwiches (bread, pepperoni, cheese, spaghetti sauce) and sweet pies (bread and pie filling).
We have done tons of different things. Breakfast goodies on bread or tortillas, Grandson loves chocolate and peanut butter with a pinch of cherry pie filling.

I just heard about crustables this summer. We took a road trip to Yellowstone-about a day and a half drive from where we live. We wanted snacks for the drive but also for the stay there since we weren't sure what would be available food wise and with 4 kids you really want to have snacks.
So I ordered some of these crustables thinking that they were shelf stable. After a few weeks in the garage I was taking inventory of the snacks I had to take with us and discovered that they go in the freezer!
I guess I should have looked more closely when I ordered them.
I don't understand why I would want these other than for a road trip. How much effort does it take to slap some peanut butter and jelly on bread?

Effort aside, you get to choose your bread, your peanut butter, and your jelly. That’s what’s most important to me. I read how people fret over “processed foods” and then they would allow some company to choose their PB&J ingredients? I don’t get it.
