Anyone have any experience registering a business?

I'm thinking of setting up a Limited Liability Company to support/document a very limited amount of agriculture production activity.

A reason I'm thinking of doing this is to be able to better support our agricultural zoning, which saves a bunch in property taxes.

I understand I'll need articles of organization. Looks like the state fee to register is about $75.

Is it worth it to hire CPA/other advisor to help?

I set up a LLC for my business several years ago, and it's very easy to set up without hiring an adviser ( at least in WA; not sure about other states).

I've done it in VA, MD, and FL. All pretty easy, although of varying costs. Just search for the name you want to make sure it is available. No need to hire anybody.

Here in CT, one need only register with the Secretary of State (and pay the filing fee) and create an operating agreement (which doesn't get filed with the SoS). There are plenty of operating agreements on line that you can use as a template. Basically, the operating agreement spells out things like ownership percentages and voting power, how decisions will be made, how the profits will be split, when you'll have owners' meetings and what will happen if someone wants out (buy/sell provisions). Obviously, this is all much simpler if it is a single member LLC.

The rules in your state may or may not be the same. You should conduct your own investigation.
