I started my 2023 tax on a laptop than installed the software on a desktop, then moved the tax file via a thumb drive to the decktop. Filed fed electronically and mailed the state. Turns out the H&R Block saved the completed returns to that thumb drive which has been reused or misplaced. There is no copy on the hard drive. There is still the incomplete, just started file on the laptop which only got as far as getting the previous year's, (2022) return. I can't find a paper copy of the fed return either. I'm just expecting the 2024 tax to be more difficult without the 2023 file to refer back to.
There was depreciation on a presently unrented rental property that the H&R software has been tracking for years.
I have the unfinished 2024 file on the laptop, a copy of the mailed state and all the other forms, like 1099s for the information that goes on to the 2023 return, so I could try to re do it, but I doubt I would get the exact amounts twice,
I called a phone number that's supposed to get me a transcript of last years retun from the IRS. It's been a week or 2 and nothing in the mail yet.
There should be a paper copy of the 2023 tax return somewhere here but it's not in the tax envelope where it's supposed to be. I've looked for it. Not found yet. Don't know where else to look. I'm not the most organized person

Hope you find your copy of the tax return and supporting documentation.

Can you request a copy from the IRS? They used to be able to service such requests. Or, how about H&R Block? Wouldn't they keep a copy of the completed return on file in case of legal questions, etc.?

I might be tempted to pay extra for an independent tax filer with insider certification with irs. They can pull down your old transcript easier than you. HRB and turbotax are too generic to do this, and IRS service is too slow and difficult to navigate for individual. You might need a pro this year.

The IRS made it difficult to recover data after the Get Transcript mistake allowed data theft.

I don't remember the exact details but I was at a IRS site that had instructions for various ways to order the transcript. One way was a phone call. I called the number, followed the instructions, gave the information and it seemed like I successfully placed the order. I was told it would arrive in a number of days. I don't remember if they said days or weeks. It was all automated. Nothing has arrived yet.

I think I'm gonna need 2023s agi or whatever the number is from line whatever on the 1040 form. That number might be on the paper copy. for state tax that I do have.
The other thing is the H&RB software has been tracking the depreciation of a rental property. The software knows the remaining basis and figures the small deprecation amount. Maybe I can look at the forms for 2022 and figure out what 2023 should be,
Or I can attempt to just redo the 2023 tax return with the 2023 H&RB software. I still have the 2022 file for the 2023 software to get previous year info from. And hope I can come up with the same numbers. I still have all the 1099s & whatever documents, that went into the 2023 return. Anyway I'm not gonna be doing my 2024 taxes in the last few days like usual. I need to get the 2024 H&RB program as soon as it comes out.
So all that is so when I do the 2024 tax the software for 2024 can gather needed info from the previous years tax file cus I don't know how to create the missing years rental property parts
