Medicare to require new Login

After reading this thread I figured I best get my house in order. I used my LOGIN.gov account and it worked fine (had to take a picture of passport, myself, and a lot of other steps). Once it was all done it stated that it couldn't find my Medicare account. Of course it couldn't as I'm only 64.5 years old.

so existing Login account would not work without re-authentication? What good is it then? If I have to do all that, I might as well do my ID dot ME that I will need to get back into IRS.

We got set-up when we got Global Entry 6 or so years ago. I think everything has "just worked" ever since. Never needed id.me.

You’ll need it to access your IRS.gov account. Now that EFTPS is going away for individuals, I have to use IRS.gov to schedule payments.

I can't remember the last time I needed to log on to Medicare but I use ID me for SS and IRS once or twice a year and all work. I'd expect it to work on Medicare too but I'm not going to poke that bear until needed.

Actually, it indicated that I was "Successful". I guess until you're on Medicare you don't have an account yet.

In terms of the work, it was a bunch of steps for sure although they did send a link to take the photos, etc. and it was relatively easy. Just a lot of steps.

I just completed this and used login.gov because that is what I had setup for social security and figured it would be easier. I started on my laptop and it prompted me to switch to my phone and follow the link in the text it sent to take a picture of my DL or Passport and a selfie. I got the phone pictures completed and went back to my laptop to complete the process.
It seems like it's just a more difficult way to login to Medicare since I still have to select login.gov or Id.me, enter my credentials, and then use my fingerprint to finally get to the Medicare site.
What does it say about people that have no cell? I certainly know many of older ages that do not .

You can use direct pay with no id requirements. They ask some vertfication is all.

DH and I got approved for login.gov. It took us about an hour. The issue I have now is the Medicare/SS accounts for my 95 year old mother who has Alzheimers and is bed bound. She has no current drivers license or passport. I am her POA and cannot figure out how to update her Medicare or SS accounts.
I read on another site that a person was told it won't be enforced they are just trying to get people to move. I find this hard to believe but you could possibly call for additional info

Back when social security started forcing the new login, I used a login.gov account that I had set up earlier for VA fiduciary access. All was good for a while. Last May (after reports of DOGE getting into SS) I went to login to get my latest SS statement (I'm not drawing yet) and it wanted me to re-verify. I went through the process but it wouldn't recognize either my VOIP home phone number nor my Consumer Cellular number (even though I've had it for about 15 years). I saw an option to verify by having them send a code by USPS, so tried that. Got to the end and it still wanted to verify a phone number, which of course wouldn't work there either. (I thought the USPS option was supposed to avoid this.) I have tried a couple more times since with the same result. I still don't have it resolved as I haven't had the stomach to go through what I know is going to be a huge hassle. (Can't tell if the problem is SS or login.gov or both.) DW got no such requirement to re-verify her login.gov and SS.

Now if Medicare stops allowing my existing login, I wouldn't expect login.gov to work any better there. Being on Medicare now, that login is actually more important to me than the SS login.

If you haven’t used id.me on Medicare then if you select id.me as the login method Medicare sends you to the id.me site to login. After a successful login, id.me asks if it can share your personal info with Medicare, say yes and you will be transferred back to a logged in Medicare.

Just went to Medicare.Gov
There were 4 choices to use for a login. I used my already set up Medicare.Gov information and it worked.
I did NOT have to use my Login.ID.
I think that the photo ID is just needed to establish the original ID Me account. I had to do a short video confrence to show my ID. DW had to take hers to the PO in person.

I hate that I had to give the id.me company a considerable amount of personal information to access federal government sites. You can’t delete your id.me account because you will lose access to the sites.
Yeah, I'm assuming we'll wake up some cheery morning and find out that id.me has been hacked and yet another batch of millions of citizens' data has been appropriated for ID Theft purposes. (Any bets against that)?

They warn to have separate account IDs and passwords per account but then go to this,,,
Its just a matter of time.

Several years ago I created a Login.gov account so that I could access the VA healthcare system. It still works for that. Social Security came out with a similar requirement a few years later and I could not get my Login.gov to work. I finally created an ID.ME account so that I could access the SS site. I guess at some point I will have to see if the ID.ME account works for Medicare, currently my old login on the Medicare site still works.

I have been having a similar issue with Login.Gov as I use it for VA Healthcare, Global Entry and a few other programs. I tried setting it up for the new SS login requirements but could not get past the phone number phase even though I have had the same land line for over 30 years and cell number for over 10 years. I finally gave up as I didn't feel the urge to go to the local post office to verify my identity. I use my ID.ME account for SS which fortunately worked without issue. We'll see how the Medicare login goes at some point.

That sounds incredibly frustrating. I hate when government databases don't sync up correctly, especially with phone numbers. Good luck getting that sorted out with Login.gov.

The govt has been hacked for sensitive information before, so I don’t see any difference.
No of course not but I limit the number of people I give out new information to. Since I'm not on Medicare it makes no difference to me at this point. By then they will have something else to do. I do feel for people who are unable to complete the requirements.

Login.gov won't sort this out - see the original post. They respond with - try one of the other options. OK, so I picked CLEAR. Much easier process - however, I mis-typed my SSN and there is no way I can edit it. Contact Member Service because it's an updated needed on their side. And I get the answer this morning. You're all set up - if there's a problem its on the Medicare side. So I'm 0 for 2.

I think it might be time to contact my Congress person.

I also got stuck in that loop, home phone is VOIP, and my cell phone is through a re-seller (Ting Mobile). You'd think they would tell you those won't work (they might have mentioned VOIP, I don't recall), but after some searches I didn't find much, tried AI, and it warned me about the mobile re-seller problem (apparently, they look through public records, which only include the direct big players like Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc). Super weird that they text to the same phone that they say they can't verify. Arggghhhh!

I had to do the virtual meeting thing, and that went through OK. Probably less time than I spent coming to the conclusion that the other methods woul;d not work.
