Micro-BTD (less than $100)

Japanese A5 Wagyu beef normally $170 a pound was at Wegmans on sell by date for $100 a pound so I picked up a .3lb package for $30 plus tax. First time trying it and seared it in a pan. Was really good, but not $100 worth to my palate at least. Always wanted to try it, now I know.

I never really got the Wagyu thing. We do like ground buffalo. Lean and tasty.

I've only had an orange slice and cherry in any Old Fashion I've ordered or made. Good cherries can get quite pricey as well.
My dad use to put pickled Brussel sprouts or pickled asparagus in his Old Fashions my mother got me hooked on the pickled mushrooms

We love good bread and despair at the offerings available at the local grocery and bakery. Been looking at trying Wildgrain, a company that ships frozen ready-to-bake breads, mostly sourdoughs. They had a deal on a trial order. It just arrived today.
  • Sourdough loaf
  • Bavarian Pretzel buns
  • Sourdough sesame seed loaf
  • Ciabatta Sandwich rolls
  • Sourdough harvest loaf
  • Sourdough 3 cheese loaf

We have occasionally bought some Holl’s Chocolates which are $24 for 16 one inch truffles. Their dark chocolate truffles are my favorites. We were recently gifted some Royce’ Nama bitter chocolate, and that is awesome too. $20 for 20 pieces, 4.4 oz. I wonder if I can bring myself to pay for it.

Changed / updated the pulls of the kitchen whilst refacing the kitchen... Like them much more. Had to fill the old holes as they were much larger and to scale.

Scored a Bissell vacuum cleaned at goodwill for $ 7.60.
It is for my Pitt apartment.
Got it home, it barely had vacuum.

Open it up, all filters totally clogged.
Scaped off inches of crud, washed the washable filters.

It can now nearly hold itself against the wall.
Sucks Great!

Well, I just had my micro-BTD moment. I stopped at the entrance to a national park and noticed that I'm now eligible for the senior discount. $20 for a year long pass, or $80 for the lifetime.

I splurged for the lifetime pass. :wiseone:
I did this $80 micro BTD as well. So worth it!

I did it when it was lots cheaper, $20 for a lifetime pass if I remember. Bought it in Big Bend, TX.

I dunno. We bought ours many years ago and it was $80. Found this. It was $10 from 1994 to Aug 2017, then increased to $80. Thank you Perplexity.

Historical Price History of the Senior Lifetime National Parks Pass

Price Timeline:

  • 1994 to August 27, 2017: The Senior Lifetime Pass cost $1011011.
  • August 28, 2017 to Present: The price increased to $80 as mandated by Congress through the Centennial Legislation

If one is a veteran, it is free. I didn't get a chance to blow any dough when I got my free lifetime pass. The free only cost me 4 years of my life. 😁

Well deserved. Thank you for your service.

My only complaint about the lifetime parks pass is that it comes on a plastic card, with nothing tying it to me. (I just showed the Park Ranger my divers license, gave her $80 and got a card. ) If my wallet gets lost/stolen, it seems I have to shell out another $80.

We had to sign the back of ours

If you lose your annual pass, like someone's DW did, you have to purchase a new one. Don't ask how I know.

Although if you have a yearly pass, they will give that already paid credit towards annual pass if you exchange it.

Thanks. Got mine in 2012 and I was certain it was a lot less than $80. Still a good value if you use it!

I cheated. Bought one when I first retired. Then just before they raised it to $80 bought another in case I lose one.

It seems so silly. They call it a "portable washing machine," but it's basically just a dry bag with little nubs on the inside that you fill with soapy water while traveling to do a little laundry.

I have many dry bags. Even an ultralight one that has a clear stripe on one side like this "portable washing machine" has. However, for stain removal, I just want to give this nubby thing a try and for $55 it's a micro-BTD.

Today I treated myself to three puzzles from New York Puzzle Company. Their puzzles are pricey at $25 (and even pricier now than they were pre-Covid) but they are high quality and beautiful and they make me happy. Total price including tax and shipping: $80.64.

Bought my dad a Father’s Day gift from a local butcher shop I go to occasionally.

Two marinated steaks: $53
Four signature ground steak patties: $23 ($12.49/lb)

My dad just sent me a text earlier today. He said he cooked a couple of the burgers for himself and mom. He said they were the best burgers he’s had since his dad’s butcher shop. My grandfather really knew his stuff so this was high praise coming from my father.

It was great to hear that he enjoyed his gift. It was more than I would normally spend for hamburgers and steaks but for dad I’ll spend the money.

One day I’ll be standing up at his memorial service trying to express how much my dad meant to me. It’s nice to be able to do something little for him now to show him my gratitude while he’s still with me. Best $76 I’ve spent in a while.

The meat was wrapped in butcher’s paper with the price tag stickers from the shop still on them. I marked through the prices with a Sharpie before giving them to him so dad wouldn’t be mad at what I spent.

Your story reminds me so much of my parents. If I gave them a nice gift, I had to mark out the prices as they never adjusted to the inflated prices - especially of mini-BTD items.

"You shouldn't be spending your money on us like that!" 25 years later, those words still ring in my ears.

I replaced my curbside mailbox yesterday after it was knocked down. The old post broke rather than coming out of the ground, so I put it back together with construction adhesive and screws. That seemed like a better idea than digging up the hunk of concrete that kept it upright. Obviously, I could have put the old mailbox back for the price of the tube of glue.

While I had been planning to replace the mailbox and stain/paint the old post, my neighbor's grandson sped up the job. His grandmother offered to pay, but I declined. My wife reminded me that I once had to stand up a neighbor's mailbox that my daughter knocked down in her early days of driving.

The new decorative post is a white vinyl sleeve over the old post, and I went for a white steel mailbox one size larger than the old one. Total cost, including the construction adhesive, was $92.
