Micro-BTD (less than $100)

I saw a Gardner's Wisconsin cheese ad on Instagram. I decided, what the heck, and bought $70.00 worth of cheese. It just came yesterday and everything we tasted has been excellent. We got cheese curds and they were squeaky! We also got:
  • 13 year old super sharp cheddar
  • Smokin hot pepper jack
  • 8 year old super sharp cheddar
  • Smokey bacon cheddar

I currently watch an old tube TV which has excellent sound and 'very good' picture quality, imo. When the tube TV dies, I plan to replace it with a flat screen TV I have stored away. But the sound on the flat screen is awful (due to tiny speakers, they say) so I will get a sound bar to fix that problem.
Here I was thinking you were gonna keep the old tube TV and play the sound on it as you watched the flat screen. Great sound on a TV - especially a flat screen - is hard to find.

Heh, heh, your micro-btd would then be the extra electricity to run the tube TV as well as the flat screen.

I bought an LG C-series 65” TV (definitely not micro-BTD) a couple of years ago and am actually impressed by its sound quality. And I’m a former audiophile who had a very nice audio setup back in the day. Sure, it could benefit from some more low end and/or external front channel speakers, but it’s still surprisingly good on movies and even music. Not all flat panel TVs are created equal.

At this stage of life, all I care about is if I can understand the dialog without needing cc. My experience is that has to do with the source as well as the TV but the TV tends to be the limiting factor (no expert, here.)

My money clip has been my only wallet for close to 20 years. It was a gift from my better-half and I love it. It holds a few cards wrapped in a few bills. However, lately I've realized that I almost never use cash, and occasionally need to find a few bills just to hold the cards in place. So, I splurged on a small, stylish card holder from Bellroy. It's leather, holds a few cards, a few bills and cost just under $100, so micro-BTD!

Not quite less than $100, but after 20+ years of the old butcher block knife set, we splurged on a small Cutco set of of six kitchen knives plus the scissors. It was fun to give the guy a mildly hard time... he was really good, as most of them are. I got one knife for "free" and I'm glad the money went to a made in USA business. If I ever see him again I'll let him know he should get in the financial advisor business... so watch out! ;)

We've had our trusty Cutco knife set for over 25 years now. Finally sent them all in for sharpening. They sharpened them and replaced all the steak knives for free too.

Update: was at the beer store a few days ago, didn't see anything on sale that I wanted. Eyed the Russian Imperial Stout again. Hmmm. Already used up gas getting here, might as well buy something. You only live once, etc. Bought the stout. Have had 3 of them over the last few days. So good. So worth it.
You told us it was a good RIS, but not the brewery! Our brewing club does a Big A** Super Stout competition annually. The winner from last year hands over Billy the Singing BASS to the current year winner. But we all win, getting to try all the high gravity stouts.

If you have a Lidl near you and you like higher gravity Belgian's they usually have Bronzen Schild. I haven't checked the price lately, but it was always priced 20% less than any comparable beers at Total Whine.

We actually broke one of their knives (probably misuse) and they replaced it free.

I love the squeak from cheese curd. Unfortunately fresh is not available in my area. The last time was from a roadside stand in Wisconsin about 35 years ago. Still one of my favorite memories.

The audio on my LG C4 OLED TV is vastly superior to my old Samsung. There are multiple sound profiles available, including one that dramatically increases the volume of voices - so newscasts are easy to understand.

We're in California, so we don't have fresh cheese curds either. That's why we ordered online from Gardener. They shipped in a cold case and the curds were squeaky when they arrived.

The brewery was North Coast. Full name of the beer was Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. I also bought some competitors : Saint Boniface Hegemony Imp Stout in fourpack of 16 ounce cans for $15.25, same price as the Old Rasputin which came in 12 ounce bottles. Also Samuel Smith Imp Stout fourpack in 12 ounce bottles, I think for $15.xx. I think I prefer the Rasputin Russian, but the 16 ounce cans of Hegemony are irresistible, for the cost savings, so that's what I buy now.

Decades ago my beer place had a stack of dusty 20 ounce bottles of some 10% abv heavy dark beer from Lithuania, Latvia or similar country on discount. Bought a case. Liked it. Next week bought another case. I think I was the only guy buying it. About a month after it showed up, I made them an offer to buy all they had. I think I got it for $12 a case, tax included. I think it was 24 bottles in a case. They had 11 cases left, bought them all, made 2 trips in my Trans Am to pick them up. I thought I was a real wheeler dealer, lol. Saved about 50% off their discounted price. Woo hoo. (I know, opposite of BTD) Making up for it now.

Old Rasputin is often what we use as our "commercial example" when doing evaluation on homebrew RIS style...a good one.

Nice dealing! I had a similar opportunity with a high ABV Belgian that was dusty and "out of date" so put on sale. And we know these beers are often better after a couple of years. Where I live, there are too many well-informed beer people to ever find the "dusty deals" but at the time, I was in a small town in Florida and it was a small, non-chain liquor store that had a "beer guy" on staff.

Beer names are so much fun! Imagine naming a beer after a sinister old Russian monk. I always loved the name Moose Drool from Big Sky Brewing Company in Missoula. Fabulous beer too.

Cold Smoke from Kettlehouse in Missoula (Bonner) is also very tasty.

I walked to the local grocery store to buy a piece of Ginger I need for cooking lunch. It was $0.16 and I gave two dimes to the cashier. She asked if I need the change and I said "no".

It bothered me for about a while just thinking about it. I should have spent sometime to go through my pockets to find exact $0.16 instead of giving two whole dimes. Well, it did save me about 30 seconds of going through my pockets. Hope this count as mini BTD. It is definitely for me.

Does buying smoked salmon shipped from Alaska count? It was < $100....but frankly, I micro BTD a lot now...and I've been BTD on airfare and travel, too. Retirement has been great so far :)

I bought some nicely aged wines off Winebid.

budgie smuggler
I had to google that one. Fortunately, no pictures came up.

I lived in Europe for 2 years. I've had my fill of them. Now, I did enjoy what the women wore or didn't wear. It was great going over there when I was 18.

I bought a new budgie smuggler for the beach this summer but no photos included🤣
The first time I went to Europe I was told that was required at the pool. Board shorts and such were frowned upon. I didn’t own any so when I arrived in Italy I headed into a sporting goods store to buy a pair. The woman working that day helped me find just the right ones. Her and my wife giggled with delight as I tried them on. I am glad it wasn’t cold that day.
