Microsoft Office 365 and Co-Pilot

Are all you folks above still working?

I gave up Office when I closed my consulting business and retired. If I need to make a document, I use the free version of Libre Office and if I need to play around with a spreadsheet, I use Google Sheets.

No more MS for me and I use a Chromebook now.

Nope. Been retired for 6 years. I just prefer MS Office and don't mind paying for it. I tried Libre Office for a while, but prefer MS's overall solution with tighter integration into Windows. And it works great on a Macs and other Apple devices, which is my primary platform.

Well, that sounds nice, but I probably don't make two documents a year anymore and just have two spreadsheets I update. I suppose if you use Office a lot, it is worth it.

99% of my communication between family and friends is via text and email.

Same here. As I've mentioned, I keep the cost down by buying a one computer license, but working or not, MS Office is my spreadsheet and word processor of choice. I'm sure there's products out there that work as good and maybe better, but I have zero interest in learning a different program and dealing with the little nuances that come with the various other options.

As for a Chromebook, I'd never be happy with such a restricted platform. I've recommended it to others who have very basic needs, but similar to MS Office, zero interest in learning a different platform.

The ONLY thing I can't do on my Chromebook is TurboTax, otherwise, it's been a great platform. I don't work anymore and have no need for MS programs. Google Play has hundreds of free programs I can download and use if so desired. I have a desktop for my TT use (yearly).

Also, most young people don't even use laptops anymore and do everything on their phones these days!

bscription goes from $69+tax/$6.99 to $99.99/$9.99 per month. The pricing change occurs at your next renewal. The Terms and Conditions now include clauses that let Co-Pilot monitor your data. Co-Pilot can be disabled. Or if you currently have the Office 365 subscription you can downgrade at the next renewal to Microsoft Personal 365 or Family plans - the classic version. This version as best as I can tell just excludes Co-Pilot, keeps all the features, and maintains the current pricing.

How about using TurboTax online? Wouldn't your Chromebook handle that? I've been using it for many years regardless of operating system.

Regarding Office 365, OnlyOffice is a nice free alternative. It even looks better (IMO) and is functionally more similar to MS software than LibreOffice is. I have used it for a the past few years on Windows 10 and 11 as well as Linux.

For PDF viewing and editing, I use the Firefox browser.

I have the family MS 365. I have kids in college and HS. I am use to the Office suite, so I like using it. I have several spreadsheets I maintain in retirement. I also use Word. My DW prefers Office. I also really like Onedrive. It is only $100/yr. I think we get our money's worth.

I also have 100's of Word documents that I have created over the years which I may use again some day. I might even revise them if I use them again. I don't want to port them to something else and have to fix any minor compatibility issues.

i'm using Free Office suite for Mac. No complaints - handles old WORD files without a glitch. So far so good. Have used Libre Office in the past too.

AJA8888,
So you are using the Google suite of apps? Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive?

I find them less flexible than the MS paid options. Microsoft still has all cloud-based essential Word, Excel, etc., but IMO they are restrictively hard to use and the OneDrive interface is slow.

Thanks for this, I'll have a look!
