Mystery Drones

24 hour news cycle craving content. Generate hysteria over stuff that probably was up there a month ago and nobody noticed. Now they are looking at planes, helicopters, recreational drones, etc. Jeez.

And you know that Bubba, BillyBob, and CindyLou now can't resist sending their drones up in the middle of the night to become part of the story............

To me the current hysteria is likely mostly people never look up at the sky as they are too busy with their phones, now someone told them to look up and magically OMG did you see that light??
I disagree. While we haven’t personally been bothered by them I know several people who have. It wasn’t going outside and looking up for them. It was being in their house and hearing the incessant noise they generate. Drones aren’t quiet, especially when there is a cluster of them hovering over your house as has been happening. It was that sound that made them look outside and see the drones overhead.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of jocularity going on in this thread. Talk of aliens, dumb people, conspiracies, etc. I don't think anyone in New Jersey is seriously saying these things are UFO's from outer space.

People are poking fun at those complaining about the drones as being unsophisticated rubes. I wonder how they would react if every time you went outside there was noisy lighted objects flying around, objects that you know are not planes?

And those could very well be 'copy cats'. I think it is a combination of heightened sensitivity, so people are looking for things they didn't look for before, plus more of them to see due to 'copy cats'.

I doubt it is anything nefarious. If they were so sophisticated, why would they be flying around with lights on to attract attention? Infrared cameras, GPS, and other sensors types would do.

I live in an area where the drones are flying around every single night. They are not small planes or helicopters. There are so many of them and it's creepy. My DH worked in aviation for 40+ years and he agrees these are not ordinary small planes or the like. It's strange that suddenly these things appear and are all over parts of the east coast. The quantity and actions of these "drones" are unlike anything we've ever seen before. Something is up, and truth answers are what we need.

They are sending out mind control waves, the only way to block them is a tin foil hat.

If you go to walmart you can get a drone - and if you are a teenager (or a teenage mentality) you are going to fly it at night for kicks.

All the normal aviation pages agree this is just nonsense but they are worried politicians will enact laws that negatively impact regular aviation.

If these are really foreign spy drones, and IMO a big IF, why would they be flying with nav lights on? I call BS, or at least internet/news hype or hysteria. Must be a slow news cycle.

Yeah, I don't understand the ridicule people are leveling at this issue. It's a big deal.

It sure seems easy to sit hundreds of miles away and say it's small airplanes, or helicopters, or the planet Venus, or ET, or whatever, but people that live in these areas clearly know they are none of these things. They are asking their government to tell them what's going on and they are not getting answers. It must be frustrating.

FTR, I'm a UFO skeptic. I don't think these are foreign spy drones. It's likely some sort of a military test occurring and that's why the government is silent.

Are we absolutely certain they're not being operated by Santa's elves, doing last minute surveillance to check everyone's naughty/nice status?

But all kidding aside, I have high confidence that people in the Pentagon know exactly what they are. I also have high confidence that they have good reasons for not being more forthcoming about it.

Slow news cycle + some bored drone operators (or drone copycats) + social media + conspiracy theories + mass hysteria = TikTok and X and Reddit and Next Door blowing up. (The only one of those sites I've ever even visited is Reddit, and that's just for the cat care/cat adoption forums!)

If I want credible information, social media of any kind is the last place on earth I will turn to.

Given our government's and our military's tech and tracking capabilities, I feel confident that they know what these things are, where they come from, and whether or not they are a threat. I also feel confident that they are not sharing everything they know with the general public - as usual - and I'm fine with that. I believe in the "need to know" school of thought, and I don't need to know.

The hysteria that led to the Salem Witch Trials springs to mind - but with the extremely unfortunate "bonus" of social media spreading speculative theories at the speed of light.

Why do you need answers and why do you think anyone is obligated to provide them to you? I don't believe there are thousands of mysterious drones, but even if there are, I won't care about them unless and until they affect me directly.

The government knows what they are, what they aren't and what they are doing. OFC, you have to be in a classified presentation to really find out.

Do drones have to often go back to their take off pad (or something like that) to recharge their batteries? I'm guess flying about would take a toll on the batteries, yet we don't see drones falling out of the sky with no electricity juice in them.

DW thinks they are hobbyist drones out to see the Christmas decorations lit up at night! Makes sense to me.

Good theory. But drones the size of a car? Unless of course the size thing is an optical illusion.

It seems everyone is using drones these days. Military, police department, news reporting, realtors, firework shows, even Martha Stewart has one. Are these mystery drones flying above 400 ft? If so they should be registered, if not they're probably hobbyists, drone clubs or just people jumping on the bandwagon and trying to cause a little drama. A few years ago I noticed a flickering light out in the desert behind my house at night. At first I thought it was a fire but realized it was red and blue flickering lights on the ground. I called the local PD and asked them to check it out. It turned out to be a good sized hobby drone that had crashed. The officer took it and I posted the information in the local Facebook pages hoping the owner would see it. It was a little concerning at the time but easily resolved. More concerning to me is the low flying F15's that buzz our neighborhood at least a couple of times every year. We have a lot of ex military living that can identify them. The whole house shakes and when you run outside you can see their afterburners. A truly magnificent sight to see but pretty damn scary as well when they have no reason to be in the area unless they're chasing something. I'm definitely more scared of them than some little drones.

My understanding is that they can fly for about 6 hours at a time.

I’m not suggesting anything nefarious. I’m just saying the people saying, “They aren’t drones. You’re all hallucinating.” are wrong.

Misidentification happens plenty often. However, not all are misidentifications.

A good example was the politician that posted (tic-toc or X, not sure which) about a number of drones flying in formation.
He later posted a mea-culpa as the drones were actually the constellation Orion.

Dismissing reports out of hand is wrong. But so is insisting that every report is valid.

Exactly. Many of the drone reports are actually about drones. Some are not.

They are just updating the old saying in NJ. It is no longer "What's that smell?" It is now "What's that light?"
