NCAA Football 2024

I love college football! It will be interesting to see what the effect will be with all the shuffling of the conferences. I am an Iowa Hawkeye so never expect to much more than a winning season. Hey, it's tough to be a Hawkeye fan. It would be much easier to be a Buckeye or Wolverine fan. But anyway, Go Hawks!!

Off to a big start already! Ga Tech upset #10 Fla St.
So Fla State is suing to get out of the ACC, I guess they want to go to the SEC to make more $$. But if they cannot even beat unranked Ga Tech (Ga Tech played a great game) is the SEC or some other conference even going to want Fla State?

Whether another conference will want Fla State or not will depend on an evaluation of the revenue they will generate for the conference.

We have season tickets to the Arizona Wildcats. A little less enthused this year with the (imo) ridiculous conference alignments, how the NIL money and transferring schools every other week (or so it seems) is creating free agency in college sports. But I am getting old......get off my lawn!

Nonsense, don't apologize for seeing that BS for what it is. It's all about money. Regional rivalries (both within and between conferences) was a big part of the fun with college ball. Now that's slowly being eroded away. PAC-10 teams in the Big 10? Please. I totally ignore the whole conference thing now.

Iowa is one of those teams that is always in the Top 20 but never takes the next step and I wish such a team would. SO tired of mostly the same teams winning it every year. It would be so cool to see an Iowa or Missouri or Kanas (etc) win it all.

Mostly a lot of blowouts against very weak opponents in Week 1. Thoughts on what I saw:

- Media is way overhyping PSU QB Allar. He was "pretty good" after a sloppy start at best.
- West VA and Michigan QBs looked mostly like crap. g/l with that. Michigan has the benefit of a weak schedule to maybe finish in the top 10, but they aren't a serious contender.
- ND was underwhelming against a Texas A&M team whose offense (mostly the QB) was dying to hand the game to them. They do not strike me as a top 10 team.
- Ohio St QB also has some kinks to work out, but hard to say given the inferior team they played against.

Next week looks like a lot more of top teams playing much weaker teams; I think I'll see if anyone wants to have a cookout.

Some close games today despite a weak schedule. Kentucky lost a heartbreaker to Georgia despite a tough D performance. Their QB is largely to blame IMO; the guy has no pocket presence.

But the worst was LSU vs S Carolina. One of the most poorly executed games on both sides I've ever seen with bonehead mistake after bonehead mistake.

Thankfully some better games look poised for Week 3, highlighted by Michigan vs USC and Tenn vs Oklahoma in the late game.

In info that may interest only me:

- I was underwhelmed by both Tenn and Oklahoma in their game. IMO neither are serious contenders, although OK might be if their backup QB becomes the starter and develops.
- Ole Miss and Mizzou are grossly overrated and will fall in the coming weeks.
- JMU, wth?
- At this point I will be very surprised if one of the top four teams doesn't take the title.

Georgia-Alabama, oh my. I watched the most of the first half, but Alabama was so dominant at 30-7 I started doing on other things around the house and had it on as background noise. Noticed at the end of the third quarter the 33-15 score, but did not think much. Then suddenly Georgia starts coming back, I noticed in time to sit and watch the last half of the 4th quarter. DW came home from her "Ladies Night Out" event to the game being blasted loud in the mancave and me yelling at the screen :). I was not rooting for either team, just enjoying the back and forth at the end.

Yes... it was a great comeback... and lots of twists and turn that last quarter...

Thought that Georgia was going to have the best comeback of the year when they went ahead... lasted for a whole 13 seconds on the clock...

Props to GA for amazingly making it interesting, but I never thought they'd win. Penn St also had their issues but managed to win. That kind of play might not work vs USC or esp Ohio St.

Terrible clock management by Alabama in the 4th quarter almost cost them, they made no attempt to run the clock down when they had possession of the ball, frequently snapping the ball with 20 seconds left on the play clock, that's football 101.

Bama dodged a bullet last night and zinger1457, you are absolutely correct about bad clock management in the fourth quarter. Gotta give props to Tide QB Milroe and the 17 year old Bama receiver Ryan Williams for an outstanding game.

In the past, a lot of potential high draft picks and players entering the portal would skip the bowl game.

WIth the potential of three bowl games (and perhaps a conference championship) will this make the problem worse?

Nope... with a national championship potential to 12 teams it means more of them play all games...

Before it was 'only' a bowl game and who wants to get hurt in one of those...

Hard to say really. This year will have 4 more games total than last year, with 8 teams having added incentive of a possible national championship. There are 72 teams that will be in the same boat as previous years. Bigger factor, imho, than draft is now NIL. Some players that would have left will have NIL deals that keep them "on the job". Others that might have stayed will leave for a more lucrative NIL deal with a new team. Money flows are quite different than in the past.

Welcome to the new world of watching any type of TV....

I remember reading an article a year or so ago about NY Yankees complaining... to be able to watch ALL games they would need to join 3 (maybe it was 4) different cable or streaming services... NOBODY carried them all...

Bowls have started & portal open...quick headlines

Penn State's (who plays in a playoff game this coming weekend) sees their #2 QB enter the portal & leave team ahead of the game....Marshall opts out of a bowl due to too many entering portal, but that gives another team a chance to be in a bowl...

Any D2 aficionados here? The Rock (Slippery Rock) put up quite fight against my Ferris State Bulldogs.

I’ve noticed feeds of college games on YouTube the last couple of years. I don’t how the YT channel gets away with it but it’s a place to check if you can’t get a game.

^^^ Just plain wrong. If a pro player is about to become a free agent then they finish the season... I don't see why college should be any different. If they bail on their team for the portal or the NFL draft before the end of their team's season they should have to defer for a year.
