New England Trip

You should drive to NH and visit Mt Washington. You can drive up the mountain for a very thrilling experience or take the cog railway. Mt Washington has the most extreme weather in north America. If you are there in September it should be low 30 degrees or possibly even 20s on top of the mountain and on some days you can practically get blown off your feet. DW and I loved going to Franconia, NH when we lived in the NE and recommend the Franconia Inn.

I’m starting to plan for my often delayed trip to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

I am curious as to what airport(s) are best to fly into from the west coast. Boston is an obvious choice as I suspect there are many flights to it and prices may be more competitive. But, a nearer airport may save time.

Ideas?

Boston is best. Your other options are Manchester, Portland or Burlington.

I'd just go by price but if you are travelling to NH first, Manchester is an easy airport to get thru and has a good number of flights thru it. Boston to Maine or Manchester is pretty much the same time wise.

if you’re planning on spending some time in Boston, fly into Boston. If you have no plans to see the sites in Boston, then fly into Portland Maine.

Lots of traffic around Boston to deal with. Not much in Portland. We flew into Portland for our recent trip to Maine and it was easy.

I worked next door in Cambridge for 40 years and drove in every day.
But now, I take the MBTA (Subway) in 14 times a year for Red Sox games.
I'd advise visitors to do similarly...

It depends on where you plan to visit and in what order.

The main area airports at Boston MA, Manchester NH, Portland ME and Burlington VT.

However, Hartford CT and Albany NY are also close by. Albany and Hartford are both less than an hour to southern Vermont, Boston less than an hour to southern NH and southern ME.

If you give us a list of what you plan to see perhaps we can give you a better answer, but generally speaking from the West Coast I would think Boston MA would be best. If time permits, I would include Boston as there are lots of things to see and do there.

I agree with the above , Boston is probably your best bet. But that kind of depends on where you plan on going. We fly in and out of Hartford a lot, but it is limited. Traffic is negligible, unlike Boston.

Are current plan calls for spending a week in Vermont and New Hampshire, and then a week in Maine.

Boston. Yes, we would consider adding a few days. There is so much history to soak in. My main concern is that this being the 250th anniversary of our country’s birth, it might be more crowded and over prices. Being a retired bum, a return trip for a week to 10 days, that includes Boston, and areas near it might be better? I am not sure.

If you fly to Boston, depending on where you are departing from on the west coast you may be able to get a non-stop flight, which we covet when traveling compared to a connection somewhere that adds another point of potential failure when traveling.

You could fly into Boston, drive across Massachusetts then north into Vermont, then east to New Hampshire and onto Maine and then down the east coast back to Boston. And add some time in Boston to one end or the other.

If you travel plans take you near Montpelier or St. Johnsbury, PM me and perhaps we can meet up for lunch.

Depends on the time of year - I would expect Boston to be crowded spring through summer but September to mid-October (before the good fall colors) should be OK. In Boston, highly recommend the Glass Flower Museum on the Harvard Campus. Completely unique and fascinating.
