Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Can't offer suggestions on brands, but if you make your own with a kit (pretty darned easy), you get pretty decent wine for $3 a bottle and under.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

The Safeway supermarket used to have a homebrew section in my corner of the Pacific NW in the 1960's. Made many a bottle of elderberry and concord grape wine and beer(got yeast from a German neighbor). Like snow sking, these are hobbies in the past. I even had a small library on brewing and was sending away for foreign malts in the 1980's. Kits have probably improved greatly since I gave it up.

Homebrew beer

Not to mix beer and wine, but...

Homebrew beer ingredients cost about $25 for 5 gallons of beer. This is for top quality malt extract, hops and yeast.

It does cost a bit to get the equipment to get started.

This is my current supplier:

http://www.northernbrewer.com

I've got a batch bubbling away in the basement right now. When done right, homebrew is excellent quality beer, equal to the $10 a six pack stuff.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

My dad was into home brew back in the late
60's. The first time I brought my future wife, Lyn,
home to meet the folks he was in the process of
caping off a batch. We waited about 1 hr to let
the bottles age in a tub of ice and then had a
blast of a party. The beer tasted awful but we
were young and had a good time.

Cheers,

Charlie (aka Chuck-Lyn)

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Oboy, I'll bet taste wasnt the biggest thing there ;)

Theres a place in sacramento where you can go and use their equipment to brew your own beer. They can even provide bottles, custom labels and cold storage. Not worth it unless you're making several cases, but a lot of guys I used to work with had a steady supply of "<their name> Beer". Kinda cool I guess.

My girlfriend has a huge growth of grapes along one fence of her yard, and she made wine one year. One word describes it. Actually several single words describe it. Most of them no longer utterable on national television. Some also mimic bodily rejection sounds.

One of my friends and I bought a little home brewing kit, complete with its own cute little barrel. Results of that expedition were about the same.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Having accidentally fallen face down in an unidentified mushroom patch once or twice in my youth and seeing the results, yes I getcha.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Linka no work.

Dammit, I cant waste any more time here. Have to go install a new fixture on the kitchen sink.

Plumbing. One of my very most favorite things to do in the world. If you live in Yuba City and have small children that are unaccustomed to the type of language emitted by the saltiest of sailors, cover their ears for the next 60 minutes.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Black Swan Shiraz is very nice - more flavor than the Yellow Tail-IMHO.

John - don't give up those Frappucino's...you're funding my ER.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Hello busymom! Yep, Starbucks stock should soar.
I found a local store which has the best price I have
seen on Frappacino. I intend to buy out their entire stock.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Costco around here sells those for just under a buck a bottle.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

I will always have room in my budget for my coffee and my red wine...and both are a necessity with my kids & schedule. Now tho' I have to drink the coffee in order to be awake for wine-time!

Really am glad I stumbled onto this site with all the experience and info' shared by everyone. Thanks...and now I have to refill my glass.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Love the Yellowtail Shiraz and going to try Black Swan. My brother says we like the australian wines because they can do filtration things to them to take out tannin and put back regular water that the BATF won't allow here. Whatever.

I wanted to share my newest find at $5-6 per bottle (nothing is ever cheaper than that in NY -- thanks to our mafia liquor distributors here) that stacks up against anything I've ever tasted at $20+. Portugese reds are coming to a store near you -- they make them with the same grapes as Port and now they've figured out how to make a decent wine from them. My find is Evel Douro Vinho Tinto 2001. See if your local carries it. I found it at a wine tasting and liked it best vs 50 other wines that night.

btw, I was pleased to find that despite my mere wannabe status in the dryer sheets department, my wife has been recycling them for years, using them to clean her computer screen. I told her about the ant repellent qualities which she liked now that its ant season. I guess that is why we were able to ER -- my wife recycles dryer sheets! The best I can do to balance the budget is buy cheap wine. :D

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

One other tip: buy a vin-o-vac if you don't have one -- sucks the air out of your half-open bottle. i've found with the cheap hearty reds (california cabs like beringer and australian shiraz) that they taste even better the second or third day -- mellow a bit and taste downright classy. all for 7 bucks or so

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Trader Joes now has a Chilean Collection that is inexpensive (I think $4 a bottle.) I'm having a glass of red now that's excellent.

Whats a half-open bottle? Vin-o-vac?
How about wife-o-vac?

You know, Dorothy Parker said, "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." Must be one of the most clever quotes of all time. Almost as good as
W. C. Fields; "Ah yes, twas a woman who drove me to drink. I forgot to write and thank her!"

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

I've got a new discovery in very cheap wine: box wines. Yes, I know most people have had the misfortune of trying a glass of Franzia and the like, but some producers are now putting decent, quite drinkable wines in the boxes and charging low prices. I bought a 3 liter box of Banrock Station Chardonnay (Aus.) recently. It is quite nice, and my past sampling of the same winery's Shiraz indicates that there is something here for red wine drinkers, too. The box has a dripless tap and maintains the wine for months at a time, so you can tap off a glass at a time over several weeks/months. Best of all, the wine is a good deal cheaper than buying it in bottles. The ox is equal to 4 regular 750 ml bottles. I paid $21, which is a shade over $5 a bottle for wine that normally goes for $7 a bottle near me. I have read that in less heavily taxes states, many retailers are charging $16.99, which is an even better deal. There are also other producers putting decent wine into boxes: Delicato, Hardy's and Black Box.

Probably should have said "half-consumed bottle", but maybe I'd been drinking when I posted that one!

As for the Vin-o-vac, its a nifty little award-winning contraption that has a rubber wine cork with a near-invisible one-way slit-valve on the top. Comes with a handy little air pump, no batteries! Pump the thing a few times and it sucks most of the air out of the bottle, leaving less in there to oxidize the wine, and thus letting the wine stay drinkable for a few extra days to a few extra weeks. (We even cook with white wine that's been hanging out in there for a month sometimes -- whites seem to keep longer esp. if refrigerated with this contraption).
Anyway, costs just a few bucks and will pay for itself quickly, since you can drink a few glasses and then use the rest of the bottle a few days later. I often find my cheap reds taste even better (softer, mellower) a day or two after opening them when stored like this.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Only problem with the vin-o-vac is I was at a party once at a friends house, and he has one. I was hanging around near the kitchen where two gals were pouring themselves some wine. One noticed and picked up the vin-o-vac vacuum tool, looked quizzically at the other and asked "whats this, one of those penis enlarging tools?" The other looked at it and said "its pretty small. Poor xyz (where xyz was the hosts wife)".

I decided a little wine rust was ok.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

What's wrong with Two-Buck Chuck? :)  Well, it's not great wine, but it is cheap.
2 buck chuck (Charles Shaw) Shiraz was just voted one of the 53 best wines in the world -- all this for only 1.99 a bottle. So it might not have been that well rated in the past but that seems to be changing. ::)

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

"Two Buck Chuck" is the greatest wine for the money
available today. Nuff said!

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

That was a funny article on the 2 buck chuck shiraz making the top 53. That tasting was out of thousands of wines, by the way.

Several "professional tasters" lamented that it could be the end of their careers for having made the blind choice...

Now...the only problem with it is that these bulk wholesale sources change pretty regularly, so you might walk into a trader joes and get a bottle from the same batch that "won", or a completely different batch that tastes like turpentine.

The wife really liked the bottle of chardonnay we got there last summer, so on the next trip we grabbed a case. Ick. Wasnt as good.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

just bought a 3 liter box of Corbit Canyon Merlot. I have a question to ask. Do you have to refrigerate it after opening.

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

No you dont need to, nor should you.

Thats a pretty darn good value. I pick those up now and then in the winter when I'm drinking reds.

Of course, I wont be doing that anymore for a long time...at least not until "uhnsfhhgj" turns into "daddy!!!"

:-X

Re: Red Wine Drinkers - Save Money!!!

Never refrigerate after opening. DRINK after opening. :p
