A wood-burning stove, solar panels connected to car batteries for electricity and a satellite radio -- all the comforts of home, right? But this little nest was found in a cave on Los Alamos National Laboratory land. Authorities evicted squatter Roy Moore from his hideaway, where he had apparently lived for years. A Lab employee noticed smoke wafting from a canyon. Firefighters called to the scene were impressed with Moore's camp, which had a bed and a glass front door. Oh, and 10 pot plants outside the cave. Moore was charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty and was released. A Lab spokesman, who said the camp was about 50 yards from his office door, insisted Moore was not a "security threat."

I wonder what his SWR is? :D

The local version is 'The River People' - you tie your houseboat(homemade or bought) up to the bank - put up a mailbox and even sometimes a powerpole. Various Goverment agencies have jurisduction over the road and water. Don't know the details of how it works - but I see plenty of them locally. Tulane University Press put out a tongue in cheek cookbook - replete with pictures of riverboat living. Not quite up to Lake Union houseboat standards.

We had a similar albeit more permanent arrangement near here up until last year. Some folks had found a nice small island in the middle of one of the local rivers, and constructed a small town on it. Generators, water pumps and conditioners, sewage...looks like they had it all figured out.

Ownership of the island was dubious and unclear, and the county went in and razed all the properties as they hadnt gotten permits to build and some of the buildings didnt meet code.

Another fine example of the govt stepping in and creating problems where none existed. I'm probably paying tax money to put those people up somewhere.

Dont underestimate the govts ability to screw up ingenuity and initiative.

In this particular fellas case, he probably would have lived out his life without impact or harm and barely come to peoples notice. Now it looks like we'll spend 10-20k "processing" him and another 100k incarcerating him. No victims, no property damage. ::) :p
