I've changed Plan D providers several times. I've always used their mail order service for my maintenance drugs. Every time I've changed I've run into the issue of getting prescriptions transferred from the previous mail order firm to the new one. Up until now, I've always succeeded.

I have recently switched from WellCare/Express scripts to Humana/CenterWell for 2026 due to large cost benefits. As usual, nobody I can talk with at Humana or CenterWell knows anything about Rx's getting transferred. I always hear I've got to get new scripts issued to the new mail order company. But I've always persisted and got them transferred in the past. What a headache...

I'm fed up with the hassle of doing this. Any advice or experience in making this happen? Thanks for any replies!

IME, you contact the organization that you want to start supplying the Rx and give them the Rx numbers and pharmacy that currently holds the prescription.

If the organization refuses, you would need to contact your state's pharmacy board and ask them to address the situation. I think that most states compel pharmacies to honor transfer requests.

The pharmacy that's dragging their feet probably does so because it's an administrative load they want to offload to you and your doctor's office.

In order for the doctor's office to handle it completely, the new and the old pharmacies would need to get advised, or you could get more medicine than prescribed.

I tried to do this a few years ago. The new Part D plan had no way to make this happen online. I even called and they were unable to help.

I ended up having my doctor send new Rxs to my new plan’s mail order department. I think physicians know many patients will need new Rxs when they change plans.

Also, if I change plans, I go into my local pharmacy and have them scan my new card so that if my doctor sends one locally, the pharmacy has my new plan info.

And if I may need refills before my next doctor’s appt, I stop in at my doctors office and have them scan my new card and update the info on file.

This is the way it SHOULD w*rk
Just get your doctor's office to send brand new order to the new pharmacy.
This is the easier way.

If you had to do this every month, then it would be worth the "fight." Since it's every couple of years, just bite the bullet and use your clinic's portal and explain the issue to your doc. S/he will understand and send the new script to the new mail-order place.

Advise the "old" on-line Pharmacy (in writing if you think it necessary) that they are no longer your Pharmacy and NOT to fill any further scripts ('cause you won't pay them.).

Of all the PIAs we have to deal with, this is a pretty good one to have IMHO.

Best luck in getting the new on-line Pharmacy going for you.
