While the step up in basis at death has been around a long time, at its core, it’s just a loophole for those who have appreciated assets.

If it goes away, what changes, if any, would you make to your portfolio?

Wash stock gains more religiously.

Feel freer to sell highly appreciated real estate.

I think the biggest issue will be step-up on personal homes. This will hit the most [-]people[/-] voters, so it may be preserved. The other problem is almost certainly widespread lack of record keeping because there has been no need to do it between the step up and the large shelter on profits selling personal dwellings. I could see the politicians keeping the step-up shelter at least on up to two personal residences.

But until something actually happens I am not doing anything. Talk is cheap in Washington but action costs campaign contributions.

There’s no legislative proposal under consideration, just campaign rhetoric and media speculation. When we have legislation we can discuss.
