Previous state listed on tax doc, can I ignore?

I retired in December 2023 and changed my residence to Florida. When my 2024 tax documents came in a few still listed my state as Michigan. These 1099INTs didn’t have any withholding so have $0.00 in state box but list Michigan as state. The address listed is my rented condo in Michigan which was my legal residence prior to December 2023, not my house in Florida. Do you think I’m safe to ignore or would you file a Michigan tax return? Do I try to get document reissued with Florida listed? I know the IRS gets a copy of these docs, I don’t know if states do?

Since there was no Michigan state income tax withheld, I wouldn't worry about it.

Check the filing requirements to be sure, but if you moved to Florida in December 2023 and are retired, I doubt you have a Michigan state filing requirement. Unless you got a pension payout or something from a Michigan job or something like that.

If you file by mail, I'd send a note with it detailing your situation. If you e-file, you could send IRS a note by mail with similar info. Keep a copy and if anything comes back to you from IRS, mail them a copy of your copy of the letter.

I'm not a tax professional so YMMV.

If you had a Michigan address on the 1099, most likely a 1099 was sent to whichever agency handles Michigan taxes. Whether Michigan chases you down or not or asks you to prove lack of residency in 2024, who knows.

It has nothing to do with the IRS. The IRS doesn't care what state you live in. :)

According to this website, Michigan participates in a program where the IRS shares 1099s with states:

I'd recommend getting in touch with the Michigan taxing authority and asking what you can do, and/or seeing if the issuers are willing to re-issue (probably not, but who knows). Also track down why they were still using your old address - you don't want a repeat next year!

The only reason these 1099s would have a Michigan address on them is if OP did not update his address on file with the payer.

I'd ignore it and let Michigan chase the $$ and provide the proof that they were not a Michigan resident at the time the income was received.

I had to prove to California once that I had left once, it's annoying but not too burdensome.

I have heard that some states are much more difficult than others to "leave" tax-wise. IIRC California was even looking at an "exit tax."

Thankfully I don't have to worry about ever being that rich. $30 Million! LOL.

If the MI tax on the income would be worth the effort, I'd pursue getting corrected 1099's.

To clarify I did in fact update my resident address on the Merrill website, was able to track down email they sent me acknowledging it on 1/5/2024. They even mailed this document to me at Florida address! I’m looking at how to get them to re-issue. It’s my TurboTax that keeps asking me for my Michigan residence info because it’s coded in the doc. I’m thinking maybe delete the uploaded one and enter my own info without state listed.

Definitely delete the import and just manually enter the 1099.

FWIW - I have Merrill Edge and I updatedmy address from Arizona to California two years ago when I moved. The 1099 received this year still says Arizona. I probably didn't care last year because I was a resident in both states.

So if you don't get it resolved ,it will just keep happening every year. When I called them, they said the residency needs to be changed. The person on the phone said it can only be updated by their "back office". It can't be changed by me or by her.

The rep I spoke with stated she didn't think anything actually gets mailed to the state.

Thus instilling a great deal of confidence, no doubt. :2funny:

They said I could call back tomorrow and request a revised 1099 to be mailed to me. When I asked if they'll mail it to the state, she said she didn't think these get mailed to the states. I'm not too worried about it to be honest. If AZ comes after me, I can easily prove that I was not an AZ resident for and time during 2024.

Based on feedback I did call Merrill to get it fixed, was on hold multiple times but they said was updated and would be re-issued to me and state within 4 business days. They didn’t know why tax ID stayed MI since they had updated the residence address to Florida.

Thanks for reply, this made me decide I had to get them to fix. I had a federal IRS letter one year because of a college savings account document error and that caused months of replies with documentation to prove account was used for child’s tuition. In the end after paying hundreds of thousands in taxes that year I had to send them a check for $12 to settle an unrelated issue of original letter. Left me believing if a person gets involved in audit they need to show they got something. I don’t want to go thru that with Michigan, better to get it fixed properly.

They specifically told you that they were sending it to a state? Contradicts what they told me.

They did, but I asked a leading question if they were sending correction to IRS and state. Maybe she did just tell me what I wanted to hear. I guess if not I should still have the corrected one to supply if Michigan sends me any tax letter.
