We're looking at booking a trip to Quebec City in December. Has anyone been there? Any recommendations of places to eat or activities?

The winter carnival 2014 will start in late January

QUEBEC CARNIVAL ALL INCLUDED PACKAGES

And you will also be too early to stay at or visit the Ice Hotel

Hotel de Glace — Quebec City's Ice Hotel

But you should still find plenty to do at

Official Web Site - Québec City Tourism

I have only visited Quebec City once and it was quite a while ago. I stayed at Le Clos Saint-Louis and it was very comfortable and in a great location inside the walled city.

Romantic Getaway for vacation in Quebec. Hotel accommodation with wedding, engagement and honeymoon packages.

Check out the hotel's website page on "places of interest".

This was a restaurant I liked, very close to the hotel:

Restaurant Aux Anciens Canadiens

It might be wise to brush up on your French!

Quite envious, here. We visited Quebec City one time in the summer, about ten years ago, and found it to be a beautiful, romantic place.

A good friend of mine who lived in Maine visited QC quite often and told me that many of the restaurants are overpriced tourist traps. We purchased a travel guide (Frommer's , maybe?) and only ate at the "$" places --not the "$$$" places. There were all very good.

I hope you post photos of your trip. We hope to return one day soon and bet wintertime is gorgeous.

You might check out the Road Scholar Daily Schedule for their December trip to Quebec City. May give you some good places to visit and dine? If you do check out that schedule, make sure to click on EXPAND ALL to see more detail.

Nice place to stay is Fairmont Le Château Frontenac the view is beautuful but expensive$299. Although they have a special for rooms november $129-$139. There is also bed and breakfast in the region. Actually the Carnaval is the main attraction. It all depends how much you want to spend also for restaurant I like Groupon as sometimes they have specials for restaurants hope it helps.

The Chateau is beautiful but what a lot of people don't realize is there are ton of European style small inns (pensiones) in the streets surrounding the Chateau. We always stay at one that has a balcony that literally overlooks the Chateau across the street about 200 metres away.

Can recommend the following we have stayed at:
Hotel Maison du Fort
- Hôtel Maison du Fort, 21 ave Ste Geneviève, Québec, Vieux-Québec
Chateau Pierre
- Home - Chateau de Pierre
Hotel de la Terrasse
- Hôtel Terrasse Dufferin | Votre hôtel dans le vieux Quebec

The "old town" of Quebec is on two levels. The upper level (where the Chateau is) is the larger part and includes the area within the walls and the Plains of Abraham. The lower part is more where there are artists shops and is where the cruise ships tie up. A fun ride is the Funiculaire, a vertical street car that connects the two.

If you wander down past the city hall to the more commercial part of the old upper town, the restaurants are more normal and better priced than the touristy area by the Chateau.

"One of our favourite things to do is just to go into a depanneur (convenience store/deli) and get a bagguette and some cheese curds, bottle of wine, etc.. and go up and have a picnic on the Plains. You have an amazing view out from the cliff tops over the river."
- just realized you're unlikely to be doing this in December !! ha ha
Also, it can get fairly windy in the upper part of the old town in the cold weather.. make sure your jackets are windproof.
