Quicken renewal up 20% but there's hope!

I drove 45 miles this afternoon to go to Staples to buy it at $41.99 (and to have lunch). Their website let me add it to my cart and said it could be picked up at the store in 30 minutes. But I chose to not purchase it online because I’d hate to pay for it and then find out they didn’t have it. In the store, the manager went to get it from storage and found he didn’t have any. I told him their website said they did. He said, “sorry”. Grrrr.

I suppose it’s possible the website does a final inventory check before the transaction would have gone thru, but I doubt it.

Having seen the above post about Walmart Online having it for delivery, I just ordered. Delivery date is stated as January 2.

Mine expires in early April, so I decided to grab this sale. It’s only a few $ more than my last renewal. I’ll chalk it up to inflation.

Some recent threads discussing Quicken renewal subscription deals.

$45 past week at several stores. Just wait for a sale.

I ordered from Walmart and delivery.

Scarier was that quicken has my credit card info and if I hadn’t renewed before it expired they probably would have renewed for me at full price (??)

I don't think Quicken auto-renews. There may be an option to opt in.

I have turned OFF my Quicken renewals. They do offer it however. But even if you turn it OFF, they do not let you delete your credit card that was stored with it originally. At least that's how it works on my Quicken Mac version. Not very cool of them.

@PaunchyPirate : I use virtual credit card numbers that link to my actual card for online purchases. That allows you to deactivate and / or delete a virtual card number so that it can't be charged again, while never revealing your actual card number. Not all credit card vendors support virtual card numbers. Capital One, Citi and Discover do in one form or another. Others may as well.

Probably. But you may be able to turn off auto renewal.

Yes, auto renewal can be turned off at Quicken. Go to your Quicken account online and the Subscriptions section. I did this yesterday so I can go back to buying subscriptions at retail at a lower price.

I am still hanging in with non-subscription Quicken 2017 for now, as long as it keeps functioning. The subscription versions do not add any value to my admittedly basic usage of the product.

(making it note to test it under Windows 11 sometime in the coming months, that might cause a change of plan :))
Likewise, I am still using Quicken 2008. It's enough for my needs and it works in Windows 11. It is the first product I test after Windows updates, or if I reinstall W11 (as I do once every year or two).

As soon as Quicken went to subscription model, I switched to Moneydance. It's not a subscription model.

You can transfer your Quicken history to Moneydance and not lose your history also.

First, a couple years ago I wanted to evaluate MD, I attempted to transfer my Q history and it failed miserably. It wasn't a clean transfer, none of my account balances really made sense. Maybe it's better now, but after my initial evaluation of MD it left me taking a pass.

As for "not a subscription model", not really true. There is a base program for single purchase, but then if you want to download transactions (and really, that's the power of using Quicken for me) it's $4/mo or $40/yr. And if you want all future upgrades they have a subscription model that is $9/mo or $90/yr, much more than Quicken.

Yeah, I don’t like subscriptions either, but face it, nothing’s free. When bought on sale as many do as shown in this thread, it’s less than $4/mo. For what it does, I’ll suck it up and pay it versus trying to transfer all my data (decades) and learn a different program.

My subscription was about to expire later this month. I did a little searching and the subscriptions available from Amazon, Best Buy, et al are all only for new subscribers. It looked to me that they are phasing out selling renewals through third-party vendors from what I could find.

The rack rate for a one-year renewal is $77.88.

I called (650) 215-9008 and told them that I was a long time user and wanted a better deal. They offered me 30% off and I'm fine with that... $59 including tax or less than $5/month is good for the convenience of One-Step Update for all of my financial and credit card accounts.

I guess the last better deal was in March. Best prices last 6 months have been ~$42-45.

You can buy another one year subscription up to a year before you need to use it, and load it into Quicken for renewal up to 6 months ahead of renewal date. It gives you another year past your renewal date.

Best deals seem to be around Black Friday, late December, some weeks here and there in Jan, Feb and March.

I'll have to consider pre-buying on Black Friday, but I think Quicken is trying their best to get rid of third party vendors for renewals.

There have still been plenty of offerings, same as prior years. The best price went up a few dollars. I ordered from Walmart, which included free shipping.

You pretty much quoted my original post when I started this thread.
