Rapid tech decay is getting me down

I wouldn't be too quick to simply change a registry value to trick Windows 11 into working on old CPU's. Folks seem to have forgotten about the hardware issue the old CPU's had than enabled hacking of their computers.

I took the advice on this site and upgraded to a refurbished Dell, back in May.

Dell OptiPlex 7080 Small Form Factor, 1x Intel Core i7 8 Core (i7-10700) 2.90 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, DVD-RW, AMD Radeon RX 640 (4 GB), Windows 10 Professional (free upgrade to Windows 11).
1 Year Extended Warranty
Tax.
For $500 shipped to my door, with keyboard (no screen).

I bought CGM, and, like everything nowadays, you get the app installed or you get nothing. So when I try to install, GooglePlay says I don't have any hardware that runs the app. Whaaa? I bought my phone, new, Motorola, 21 months ago. It won't be upgraded to the next OS. And, yes, the OS is technically out of support now, and the app developers have decided not to support old OS's. I have an app on the play store that supports the oldest OS that they'll let me support, but there's pressure there too. My code, written ages ago, doesn't use any new language features, but they keep making me drop old phones.

I've already got three phones that I have in my 'old cell phone' box. They have software for weird stuff that I don't want to move to any new device (critter-cam, quad copter, etc). I pull them out when needed. I checked, and I could get $50 for this phone on eBay, so hardly worth the trouble. Better to have it for sketchy or nosey apps.

Exactly because of the litany of frustrations in this thread, we work hard, very hard, to under utilize technology. We refuse to WiFi enable our Smart TV's (we use a plug in Roku instead), our new HVAC control (we simply use the manual function instead of the programmable ones), we have no Alexa type systems, no WiFi enabled alarms, no WiFi enabled appliances, etc.

I refuse to be a slave to technology. I'd rather go hiking.

ETA: I'm smart enough to figure out what I need to when push comes to shove, so I'm not a tech luddite by any means.

...

But it's not a like for like comparison of modern devices to old Bell telephones from almost half a century ago. Those were simple devices, not capable of doing much.

....
If all you want to do is talk on the phone, the old phones work perfectly well and actually have better sound quality. We have three still in use in our house today - a Western Electric Model 202 from the 1930s, a model 302 from the 1940s and a Model 554 from the 1950s. I much prefer to call people on my home phones than use the mobile.

I make do with older tech as long as I could. E.g., two of my home computers' OS is Windows 7. Others are Windows 10. It doesn't bother me at all. I take pride and satisfaction in making the best of older stuff. Embrace the decay.
