Reloading Subsonic Ammo

I was thinking about this thread and it occurred to me that ammo and reloading supply "shortages" have been happening for decades (not years). And when a shortage happens, it seems to last for years at a time. Seems there is a different "excuse" associated with each shortage. (I won't go into that here!) So after a shortage would subsided, I'd stock up since if you keep this stuff dry, it will last a lifetime+. And of course prices kept going up with each shortage. FYI, I can remember buying primers for 99 cents a box of 100 back in the 1970's. Funny, I don't ever recall a "bullet" shortage  but maybe I missed that. Anyway, now that I'm in my early 70's, I can comfortably say that I'm set for life in the ammo dept.
Coming back to this thread just over a year later. CCI small pistol primers are still rare as hens teeth, but MSRP on them tells me that those plus bullet heads are almost 1/3rd the cost of factory ammo. factor in time to de-prime, clean and load it doesn't pay to hand load 9mm ammo today. the only benefit is to make a special recipe to your performance needs.

I have dies for 9mm but don't load them. The juice just ain't worth the squeeze. Besides, I don't shoot 9mm's much and have plenty of factory stuff anyway.

Much prefer 38's specials, 38 supers (my favorite) and 45ACP's for target shooting. 357's for concealed carry. All of those are worth reloading, IMO.

I recently bought a couple of replica single action revolvers in 45 Colt. Talk about a caliber that it pays to reload. Of course the one type of primers I had the least amount of was Large Pistol as I only have 3,000 of those. Fortunately, they are available locally. I have discovered that 45 Colt in a SA revolver is great fun. Probably further acquisitions in my future.

I assume you are taking about 45 LC's (Long Colt's.) Yep, I have one of those too but I don't shoot it enough to justify reloading. Nice caliber though. Accurate and low recoil.

Low recoil dependent upon how I load them. I need a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt so I can try out some of those Ruger only loads. Those can be loaded up near 44 Magnum range. I have a 4.75 inch Blackhawk in 357 Magnum and hot loads with it are joyful.

They turn out pretty ugly because I powder coat them (vs FMJ). I used static to hold the powder on and then cooked them in a little toaster oven. It was pretty fun while it lasted. Now that I have my own place to shoot I never do any more. I'll probably get into it again when I get the house built.
We have a lot in common.... I'll get back to making my own and powder coating them when I get the house done. I have molds for 220 and 165 grain in 30 cal, 55 grain for 22 and also a 1 OZ slug for 12 Ga. I powder coat the same way, and use gas checks for the supersonic stuff. Probably have 500 lbs of WW lead. Will add some other molds in time.
