We sure do! Our tax person filed electronically this year, per normal. NOT per normal we had a very large refund coming - like tens of thousands. Don't think I've had a refund in maybe ever years? Something to do with me overpaying our quarterlies a lot. We requested that the refund be applied to the April quarterlies and the remainder be deposited to our bank electronically.

A couple weeks later we shifted camp up to Oregon. Nothing had hit the bank and we were joking with each other about the IRS timelines being very hardline for the taxpayer, not so much for the IRS. UhOh. Where'smyRefund reports the return is being reviewed. I start trying to find out what's up, without success. Audit fears bloom. Never had one of those either. On 5/12 I get an email informing me that a letter from the IRS that requires immediate attention had been delivered to our SoCal address. That agreed with the IRS statement online.

We had our forwarding all set up with USPS, so we wait. Have a friend down south check our mailbox daily. nothing. Do some searching and learn that the IRS, for our safety, has it's mail in "Do Not Forward" status, and if we've changed addresses we need to file form blahdebla, by mail, and wait weeks for processing. We don't want to change addresses and fowl up our Primary/secondary residence status. Days pass.

Today we got the letters with yellow forwarding stickers on them and learned the IRS just wants to be sure we are the people who requested that refund and want it applied as asked. A little online verification time later all is good and after nine weeks of processing our refund should hit our bank.

Leaving alone the mail forwarding issue, I'm glad to see the IRS being careful to avoid mailing our refund to Nigeria. Not really sure why the "processing" will take nine weeks, an do wonder if they will bust us for non-timely payment of our quarterlies!

Quarterlies are late already - what would you do? Send in payment and skip the June quarterly?

Edit: Should also blame the refund on a large one time charitable contribution in 2025.

My experience with the IRS this year went like this. Sent in paper return last week of February, via registered mail, return receipt requested. Receipt said IRS received it on 3/5/26. After six weeks from date of IRS receipt of return, I check "IRS Where's My Refund." Always get the "information given doesn't match our records" statement. On 5/15/26 I was electronically depositing a check into my local bank and notice my refund from the IRS was finally deposited that day. Great. So just for fun, I go back to the "IRS Where's My Refund" site and it's still saying "information given doesn't match our records". Great system.

Did you try logging into each of your IRS accounts while you were waiting for the paperwork to catch up to you? You can usually read notices that the IRS has mailed to you there even if you haven't gotten the paper copy yet.

For the question about quarterlies, as long as you file your return on time, the amount credited towards the next year's return is considered a Q1 payment no matter how long it takes the IRS to finish their processing. The only issue would be if there were an error on the return and after the IRS corrected it your refund ended up being smaller than the amount you had intended to pay towards 2026. It doesn't sound like that is a concern in your case though. You can just make your Q2,3,4 payments on time and you'll be fine.

Last time when we had a $5K refund we also had to undergo a verification process and it took another 2 months before we saw the money.

[MOD NOTE] Very clever, but I foresee a short thread if this continues.

Did you each get a letter? Just curious as we had a larger refund this year and it has not come through yet. Hoping verification is all that is needed.

Latest in the saga - email from the IRS this morning saying we have a status update on our account. Get signed in to the account and find that they have done whatever to our file and we have a refund coming by the 17th - about two months after we filed. Not in the bank yet.

On our original return we had asked that the refund be applied, first, to our first quarter taxes due April 15, with the large remainder refunded to us. Been chewing my nails about the April quarterlies (if the refund was in question do they use any of it to make payments? Am I late on April quarterlies even if they decide our numbers are right?). Decided our numbers are right and if so they would be in the wrong to withhold April quarterly tax payment. June 15 quarterly payment is shown as pending in our bank.

The new wrinkle is the IRS claims our refund to be deposited is way more than I think, even after pulling out the April payment that they maybe didn't make? Thinking a large chunk of that refund is going to camp out in a bank while waiting for the next IRS letter. Gotta keep the stomach churning even if getting money back!

I remember you saying you set your tax payments to pay at the appropriate dates in the electronic payment area - looked longingly at it but like to keep options open as long as possible. Kind of dumb - use autopay on as much as possible and tax payments are in the highest priority category so should just do it. After this gets sorted.

When I first joined a CPA firm right after college... office went to dinner on 04/15.
One partner said to me (the new guy) you know WHY we are celebrating, right?
I said - another tax season is over??
He said - NO! Today the statutes (of limitations) have run on another year and THOSE sins are buried!
