I try to return anything unused, especially if purchased locally. Even if it costs me more in time and effort than it is really worth I rationalize that this helps me avoid making unnecessary purchases and is the "green" thing to do. A step before the "reduce->reuse->recycle" triangle.
What I have a harder time resolving is what to do with used items that have little value. Like an old lawn sprinkler or fertilizer spreader that I will likely never use again and want to get rid of. It might have some value to someone in town, but I don't want to have a yard sale or try to find someone to come by and pick up for free. So it goes into the trash.
